We will be in Switzerland in a few weeks, but only for a few days and enough time for only one day trip from Geneva.

We're not going to have a car, so we will rely on trains and buses, but don't want to spend all day on them. We want to go somewhere in or near the Alps, with some hiking trails but also other ways to get up to higher altitudes, and want a quaint place with other things to do. We're not interested in extreme sports, and food is not even a thought because we will be probably packing our own lunch.

We will consider places in Switzerland or France.

Based on these criteria, where would you recommend we go?
