Moving to Brooklyn Park, need advice.

Hey all! Very new to this sub, but excited to be here! My partner and I (23+24, no kids or plans to have kids) recently made the decision to move to the twin cities to have better job opportunities (we’re from a small town in central WI). She is an English teacher and I work in analytical chemistry. We have been hunting for apartments that are equidistant from our jobs, and settled on a unit located in central Brooklyn park, off of 73rd Ave. Since making news of the move public we have been facing a lot of flak from family members for moving to Brooklyn park because it “has a lot of crime and drugs.” My online research has found that while crime rates there seem to be high, they’re not at all much higher than the rest of Minneapolis. We’re excited to be moving to a more diverse neighborhood, and we really like how convenient the location is for work, so I’m here to ask if anybody who’s lived in that area can attest to how “bad” or “good” it is to live in. Basically we’re wondering how much truth there is to what our family members have been saying.

Edit: she is working in forest lake and I’ll be just north of Burnsville. We’re happy for advice as to what neighborhoods would make sense for us to live in. Apartment budget is around $1500 per month for a 2 bed.
