Missing a sound of summer

Most years I hear cicadas in late July or early August. This year I haven’t heard any. Have others heard them yet?

Looking for an adult dance class/program with a end of year/season recital?!

Hi TC friends!

I am a twin cities native but now unfortunately live in northern rural iowa. Anyways, I'm desperate for a fun way to stay active that isn't just walking/relying on home workouts or going to a stupid macho man gym called Freedom Fitness and I got nothing for options where I am. I'm up there almost weekly or biweekly for errands/appts/just to GTFO of iowa anyways so i'm looking for a fun class I can go to weekly or twice? I'm a former gymnast/dancer who would love to stretch that muscle again and am curious if there's an adult dance program that has a recital or some sort of small group performance at the end? haha I have a nostalgic longing to take a dance class that ends with a recital like it's 1998 again. It would also be a good way to keep me committed/incentive. Lmk!!

Please support and visit your local library. They need us just as much if not more than we need them.

Hennepin county has now submitted next years change of hours to accompany budgets. All the libraries are getting cut hours and some are closing more days than this year. This affects our communities in several negative ways. It affects the lower income communities the hardest.

It's free to visit the library. Every visit counts for something. The more this vital resource is used the more important it becomes. We all have realized the amount of "third spaces" are quickly disappearing. The library is still one of the places that you can visit that doesn't bleed you of money.

It's a great communal space to gather and meet others. There are spaces for children to learn and explore. There are resources and computers for those who could not access on their own. There is access to a wide wide wealth of knowledge. They have great social gatherings where you can also learn a thing or two.

I'm afraid this cycle will only continue. The less people utilize the service, the more they have to cut back, and the cycle will continue until the libraries start closing. I'm afraid for the future of the library.

Check out your local library. You may be surprised to learn how useful and special they are.

There is also a link on the hennepin county library website to submit comments to the commissioner about the changes in hours. I hope you will share your thoughts with them if you can about the effects reduced access to the library can and will effect your community.

Recommendations for educational institutions to donate school supplies

Hi all,

My husband and I would like to donate a few hundred dollars worth of school supplies to celebrate the first birthday of our son. Please share recommendations that we can purchase at the retail stores that can be used as supplies for the upcoming school year.

We would like to donate across a few schools in the Twin Cities area. We are hoping that some of these school supplies help kids in this school year. We also prefer multiple small ticket items vs few big ticket items.

  1. Items to purchase and quantity suggestions

  2. Schools that are in most need

Thanks in advance.

Steakhouse and hot tub with limited mobility

My husband uses a walker and is on oxygen (has portable concentrator with ~ 3 hr battery). He's getting a little stir crazy and wants out of the house. He'd like try some steak houses, a hot tub and maybe a sports venue. Ideas for a weekend in the cities?

Starting couples therapy, scared and nervous.

Never done therapy before, wife and I have talked about it but never took the step until now. 50’s, almost empty nesters, having a hard time living together as a couple again after 25 years of raising kids in a chaotic, busy, not horrible marriage. Just the distractions of having 4 kids around now down to 1 is throwing us for a loop and is forcing us to see the issues we’ve long ignored or didn’t know how to deal with.

Grew up in the old school “therapy is for psychopaths and criminals” household and never saw my parents fight.

I know a good therapist is supposed to tell you what you don’t wanna hear, and being the peacemaker and anti-conflict one of the pair of us, I’m usually blamed for and take the hit for the issues we’ve fight about. But dammit I’m scared of what’s going to come of it, and how do we/I trust this person to tell us what we need to do to learn to live together again in peace and be happy together?

I’m literally sitting in the parking lot before my appt waiting for my wife to show up and I’m rarely this nervous and scared.

Think I just needed to vent that somewhere.

Day Trip Recommendations

My wife and I are looking for some fun day trips to take from the Twin Cities (that are still queer friendly outside of the metro area). We just moved here this summer from Texas where day trips were pretty much nonexistent. We are loving exploring the cities, but I love to just “get out of the city” and go for a drive!

We are looking for two different types of day trips (see below) that we could take as summer winds down and into the fall. TIA!

Day Trip Type 1- looking for a town with a scenic drive along the way. It has a cute downtown area with good coffee, cute shops, restaurants that sort of thing. Walkable for the most part once you get there. Bonus if they go all out for fall/halloween etc.

Day Trip Type 2- love getting out into nature but I am not a hiker. I have seen some cool spots but they seem to require a lot of hiking. I have some mobility issues and asthma. I am fine with walking paths or short “mini” baby hikes but no crazy stairs or steep hikes. So looking for day trips that are more accessible along those lines of being flat or easy/quick to get to the scenic spots.

Brian Ingram (of Hope Breakfast Bar) on the news... in Milwaukee??

I just happened to see a segment on the local Fox station while at the liquor store in Milwaukee and my ears perked up when Brian Ingram's name was mentioned. The Gnome was apparently robbed, and the news was running a piece about the number of burglaries he has gone through and the lack of response from the justice system. I know he's been in the spotlight for various things in the cities the past few years, so I find it very odd and suspicious that this piece would be running in Milwaukee where he does not have any affiliation as far as I know. Does anyone have any insight or theories as to if there's something going on here behind the scenes?

Cat Rehoming

I need to rehome my fur baby 😭😭😭 I love him very much but I can no longer support him fully. He needs lots of love and affection and I cannot give it to him without causing myself harm. I tried for 6 years and now it’s time for me to say goodbye. He already has an appointment with a shelter so I can relinquish ownership, so this post is for anyone who would love to provide him with the utmost care. He’s a little brat but VERY loving. He’s cuddly and affectionate and he needs lots of specific attention — shared space with view of you. It would be beautiful if he could have an owner who wants to spoil him as much as humanly possible because he deserves it.

Apartment Issues

Hello r/TwinCities

I live here currently but wanted to see what rights I have. So I was supposed to move into an new apartment on this upcoming Monday, but the apartment I moved into said that due to status of the apartment and current tenant issues I am not able to basically. They said i can move into another nearby complex though but I declined that offer and have signed a new lease to a different complex/rent company. I paid my deposit and rent for the time I will be living there this current month for the apartment I was planning on moving in. However because I cannot move in, are they required to give me my deposit and rent back that I paid? what are my legal options here if they push back? They haven't responded to my refund questions yet and I imagine they will tomorrow since its late today, but I want to be ready in the event that they push back about paying me back.

Anyone recognize this dog?

Found at White Bear Ave and Ross Ave E in Saint Paul tonight (August 18) at 9:45pm. I took him to the emergency vet to check for a chip, he does not have one. They said he’s about 2-3yo and seems generally healthy. Intact male black tri corgi.

He was only wearing an electronic bark collar when we found him. He’s very friendly, so he belongs to someone! He’s staying in a kennel in our house tonight but we cannot keep him beyond that (we already have two dogs).

We already made a found dog post on Pawboost. Please keep an eye out for anyone looking for this boy! We don’t want to bring him to animal control but we will have to tomorrow afternoon if we don’t find his owners.

August 19 update: We brought him to Saint Paul Animal Control this morning. They said they will hold him for 7 days before working with a shelter or foster program to rehome him. Wish we could have fostered him longer, but we’re just not able to this week. https://www.stpaul.gov/departments/safety-inspections/animal-control/animal-shelter-services/lost-and-found-pets

Black Honda Accord hit on 77 southbound yesterday around 3pm

It didn’t look like there was any major damage to your car but I got a pic of the license plate if you need it! And to the person in the white CRV with a Packers window cling - quit driving like an asshole in heavy construction traffic
