Can we stop pretending that hiring is based on how capable someone is?

I have seen it over and over again. If someone is a “buddy” of the hiring team they have a leg up over everyone else regardless of skill Also more and more teams are completely homogeneous… you will not get hired unless you are from the same background as the hiring team and the leaders

Personally at my company there was a team hiring and the manager was saying they could not find the right candidate. Then a few weeks later hired someone who literally had the same name as them which is foreign name and not that popular in the US and that team literally had 3 people with the same name.

So please don’t feel so bad if not selected cause I have seen it happen over and over again and it’s not something any of us can help.

Barely had an interview after 3 months

I’ve literally had 2 interviews but I think I am also in a rough spot as I am fairly senior (10+ years) and my compensation is extremely high for an IC in my area.

I also am a more “traditional” analyst and I do not have experience with LLMs. Luckily I still have job but it’s hell on earth with all the PIPs, layoffs and productivity tracking.

I even started to have wild thoughts that maybe I’m blacklisted or something lol. I use AI to tailor my resume but no hits. I tried to apply to gov jobs where I would take a 100k pay cut and no interview. The two interviews I did get were with reputable companies for very senior positions with high comp that I would say are high competition so maybe I’m doing something right but it feels hopeless. Anyone relate?

Any corporations that still have a decent culture?

I work for Amazon and it has been pretty rough and it’s taken a toll my mental and physical health. I’ve been looking for jobs but worried I’ll fall into the same pattern of constant fear of PIP, layoffs, toxic politics and not meeting arbitrary metrics.

I don’t mind taking a significant pay cut for a low stress job. Honestly at this point I probably need a break anyway. I’ve tried to apply for some gov jobs but have not gotten interviews. I’m guessing they prefer someone from the public sector.

Any suggestions for companies I should look into? Or is it all the same toxic bullshit everywhere 🤣

Tipping culture here is becoming like the US?

I am a tourist from the US and at times I felt like I was back home with the tip screens that seem to seem to show up for everything now. A lot of restaurants gave me the default 15-20% tip option and even at walk up cafes the card readers ask for tip. I traveled to Italy and Spain recently and never had the tip screen come up so this was a bit of a surprise for me.

Are people paying these high tips here now? As far as I know people in Germany are still paid a living wage in the service industry. One thing I like about Europe is the general lack of tipping culture. In my country sometimes even you hire a plumber or electrician they start to ask for a tip now it’s unbelievable and exhausting but maybe this tipping culture is becoming more common in Europe now too.

I don’t get the hype with the state fair

I feel like saying that in Minnesota is frowned upon and will make people think you’re negative but for me the state fair is just okay and not something I’d necessarily miss if I never went again. I actually bought into the hype and went again this year and I still don’t get it.

As for the exhibits some are impressive like the crop art but it’s always super crowded and 99% of the overall exhibits and animals are the same every single year. It’s the best the first time or when you haven’t seen it for a long time.

People rave about the food but it’s just standard food that you find at festivals just with more variety…and some items can be more expensive or lower quality due to the demand.

So thats my dirty secret. It can be fun but I don’t think I’ll ever be one of those people that rave about it or cant miss it. Wondering if anyone else secretly has this opinion 🤣

Mid thirties $1.3 M advised not to take sabbatical

I am in my mid 30s net worth fluctuates daily due to having almost everything in stock market but I think I can safely say I have at least $1.3 M even on a bad market day. Half in taxable half in retirement accounts. Not a homeowner.

I posted in other communities about taking a sabbatical as I have been feeling burned out at work and was strongly advised not to do it as I am a tech worker and it would be very hard for me to find a job later on and the stress may be too tough on me as I’m an anxious person. I have tried to look for other jobs but I can barely get an interview as I’m a just a standard developer. I would say it is very hard out there and my biggest worry is if I took time away and had a gap it may mean I am out do the industry permanently.

My expenses are like 4-5k a month but long term I would probably want to buy a house as I do not want to live in a small space all my life and I am not a person that likes to stress about money. What do you think would it be safe to take a sabbatical? I have been advised just to keep working here and see what happens.

Is taking a sabbatical in this job market even possible anymore?

I’ve been crashing out at work and really burned out and I’ve had a few people suggest a sabbatical but the job market is absolute garbage right now. I feel like if I took a break and had a break the gap on my resume would make it near impossible to find a job and the stress would probably make everything worse.

I have colleagues that were laid off months ago or even over a year ago still looking for a job and it took one of my friends 1.5 years to find a job and this was like 2 years ago when the job market was better. I’ve been looking for jobs and can’t even get an interview.

I have a $1.3 M net worth but still need to work as I’m in my 30s so retiring is not an option. Would it be safe to take a sabbatical?

I had a panic attack at work. Should I quit?

I’m been under a lot of stress at work. I’m required to be in office 3 days a week which means a very long commute into the city and my job is pretty toxic. We’ve had 3 major re-orgs in 2 years with many people let go and I constantly feel like I’m on the chopping block and I don’t think this my product owner personally likes me. There are a lot of politics and I’ve been stuck with some difficult projects with dependencies on other teams that I’ve been unable to push through and I feel like I’m failing on my metrics.

I started feeling very panicky cause I just had a meeting with my boss and he told me he didn’t feel like I was delivering enough and I had multiple people pinging me and a bunch of deadlines I had to meet and I was feeling like I was having a heart attack and couldn’t breathe. I feel like kind of a loser saying this but I really felt like I was going to die. Thankfully I was working from home and I live near an urgent care so I went there and the doctor did an EKG which was a little abnormal but she thought it was due to a panic attack.

Honestly I’m scared for my physical and mental health. I’m in my mid-thirties and I don’t know what’s going on. I would stress out before but never like this. I have insomnia and panic attacks now. I don’t know if I should just quit. I’ve been trying to look for other jobs for a few weeks but nothing yet. Should I just put in my 2 weeks if it doesn’t get better?

Anyone feel like PIP culture doesn’t improve efficiency?

I work for a large Corp and PIPs have gotten more and more common as managers have to meet a quota every performance cycle. I feel like the culture has turned very toxic. People are not nice and it brings out the worst in some people who specialize in throwing coworkers under the bus and kissing up to management. It makes people very individualistic and you don’t feel like a team at all.

Also I feel mentally exhausted all the time like it doesn’t really motivate me to work and it’s quite the opposite. I’m stressed and anxious coming in every day and I don’t feel any desire to put effort into a company that can fire me at any time.

Only have a week to prep for major interview

Haven’t had a job interview in 4 years and very rusty right now. I’m really hoping to get the job but feeling very unprepared. Like many others I’ve been using AI agents and also doing the same work every day so I do not feel prepared to answer complex coding or stats questions. It’s not been easy to get an interview so really hoping not to drop the ball here.

I’m cramming leet code and watching YouTube videos on interview techniques but what else should I do?

Hit $1.5 M at 35 but job is making me ill. Should I keep grinding?

Hi ladies, I have about half in retirement funds, half in taxable brokerage. Total fluctuates every day as I have almost all of it except 1.5 yr emergency fund in the market. Live in the Midwest and monthly spending costs are low (~4k-5k) but probably want to buy a house at some point to improve my living conditions.

I make a decent living (low 200s total comp) but my job is making me SICK..very toxic culture and leadership expects me to do the work of 5 people due to AI. Stressed due to constant layoffs and worrying about being bottom 10% and PIPed. Zero support due to matrix structure and pushy leadership.

Pro of this job is I am able to save ~80k a year after taxes and medical. I’ve been debating if I should stay and grind it out. I think after 5 more years I would be close to my FIRE number. The industry truly sucks right now and it’s almost impossible to find a job and these may be my peak earning years. The only thing is I started having anxiety and feeling physically ill due to the stress.

I have heard about ‘coast fire’ but I tried to apply to some lower paid remote/government jobs and never even got an interview. I have an interest in fitness and asked my gym about employment and was basically told that there is almost no hiring right now and you have to have relevant experience to even be considered for a low level job.

Just feeling a bit frustrated and lost right now. If anyone could give me some advice or words of wisdom I’d really appreciate it 🙏

Anyone getting anxiety spikes from work?

Things have gotten so bad these past few years at my job. Constant layoffs, stack ranking, off shoring, politics, and overwork. I’ve never been someone who loved their job but I always found it tolerable but lately I get anxiety and sometime I feel physically ill from it. It’s not just feeling overworked but also feeling unappreciated and disposable like I could be laid off at any minute. I am literally doing the work of 2.5 people right now after they got cut and my leader tells me I should be doing the work of 5 people due to AI…

On the other hand I hear people saying they’ve been unemployed for months without finding a job so that those employed are lucky but I’m getting to a point where my worries about being laid off is being overtaken by the urge to just quit because I’m so burnt out.

I try to look for jobs and can barely get an interview and I chat with my colleagues at other companies and they are experiencing the same bullshit so it feels like there’s nowhere to turn. Is there any way out of this situation? I need the paycheck but this shit cant be healthy

Anyone feel like having the nest egg actually makes work feel worse?

I see a lot of posts with people saying that once they had enough savings to coast, work got better because they felt like they don’t have the pressure to perform and started liking their job. For me it’s been the opposite…before when I feel like I really needed the job and the money some things annoyed me, but I would just put up with it, but now sometimes it feels intolerable because I feel like I could take it or leave it and I can’t deal with the bullshit and sometimes I just wanna walk out.

The thing is I’m not there yet in terms of being able to outright quit my job and never work again. I still need to work, but I just don’t care as much now and this is where I’ve really been struggling. Did anyone else feel this?

I drive a 10 year old car, live in a small house, rarely eat out, always look for deals and fly basic economy. Only my immediate family knows how much I have saved and that I was able to reach $1 million by the time I was in my early 30s. People look at me and think I have no money and I actually prefer it that way and I don’t talk about money. I’ve always been a saver and I treat myself occasionally but I don’t really have a desire for extravagant things. I just think it’s funny if people assume I’m broke and I just smile and play along lol

The timing chain on my SUV went out and I am getting quotes around $3k to repair and it’s very expensive in terms of both the part and labor as it’s a long repair.

Now I wondering if it’s even worth it as the estimated value of my car is worth a little less than $10k but maybe I could only sell it for like 8k. I’m debating on whether I should just trade it in as the car is over 10 years old with 100k miles and I have the funds to purchase a new car right now.

If the cost was like $500 I would fix it but do you think such a costly repair is worth it for an old car like this?
