Illutible - Playing For Keeps
When I start a new track, often it has no name. Sometimes it doesn’t exist until the moment I sit down.
Some tracks start with an idea I developed on the guitar – but not many these days.
Some start with a beat, some with just vibing out with a particular instrument, be it bass, piano or something else.
This one started with an electric piano riff, which I ended up using only for the intro. It evolved into the bass line, then was minimised further.
At some point I need to save the track for the first time. I always pick an actual name at this point. No ‘vibey Hungarian minor trip hop thing’ - an actual name.
This song got called ‘Playing for Keeps’. It made me think of someone being pursued through back streets on a dark night.
Once I name a song, I lean into it. Ninety-nine per cent of the time that’s what it’s called when it gets released.
Anyway, here’s a vibey Hungarian minor trip hop thing that evokes a sense of being pursued through dark back streets on a wet night in the 1950s.
It’s on all the things. (100% Human made music!)
