Hi everyone. I wanted to share a video essay that is very personal to me. It’s an attempt to move away from just "playing games" and instead try to visualize how I actually perceive them.
The core of this essay started with a simple thought about the most basic element of almost every game: the act of a character's death and their subsequent respawn. I started digging deeper into this cycle and it led me to some interesting parallels:
- The "Music" of Gameplay: I’ve always felt that gaming has a lot in common with music. We don't love a song for its final note, but for the rhythm in between. I believe game loops function the same way—as a rhythmic experience our brains crave.
- Psychology of the Loop: I looked into how B.F. Skinner’s experiments with rats from 100 years ago effectively predicted our behavior in modern games and social media.
- Narrative Death: How titles like Hades or Noita turn the frustration of failure into a core narrative and emotional hook.
I’ll admit my English isn't perfect, but I put a lot of effort into making the visuals and the script as clear as possible to convey these feelings. It’s not a technical breakdown, but rather a reflection on why the "grind" can sometimes feel like a state of flow rather than a chore.
I’d be curious to hear if anyone else perceives their favorite games through a similar "rhythmic" or psychological lens. Thanks for checking it out.
