This is for the teens who are in love with Monster High. JUST THINK ABOUT IT.
But nobody gives a proper answer. All they say is “Well he’s not a very good boyfriend, he’s always anxious and is easily manipulated by his parents!” but literally WHO ISN’T. Considering he’s 16 and his parents are trying to force horrible speciesism morals onto him at such a young age when they know his son is already sensitive enough about anything remotely overwhelming, it’s not a proper reason to hate him. He’s just a victim of monster-related abuse. Therefore I think Gil is a really good example of teenage mental health and how parents can really deteriorate that for people like him.
Gil is put in a decision where he has to choose between saving Lagoona from the islanders or running away in which he visibly struggles to decide which one to choose, only to decide to run away. For context, Gil is making this decision from a cliff way above where Lagoona was in trouble down below. Meaning he would be risking being injured on his own to save her if he decided to do so and jump down. At the end of the movie, Gil gets over his fear of the sea creatures that lived at the specific place they travelled to and used those creatures to help Lagoona. From what we can see in the early webisodes when they barely introduce Gil, it’s evident from the beginning that he is horrible at decision making, especially when it comes to the cost of betraying the opposite party. It overwhelms him. To prevent a panic attack, I completely believe that the decision Gil made here was realistic. If any of the readers of this post were to have to make a decision much like Gil’s, they would need time away from that to think about what to do. And that’s exactly what Gil did. He ran off and chose to FIRST get over his fear THEN utilize that to save Lagoona. It is incredibly insensitive to hear that people genuinely hate Gil mainly over how sensitive he is and how he tries to solves things on his own.
Granted, they aren’t perfect. The biggest thing stopping them from being so is most definetly Gil’s parents. It is not his fault that they choose to be mentally abusive towards him. For context, Gillington Webber is a freshwater monster while his girlfriend Lagoona Blue is a saltwater monster. Monster High lore tells us that there has been a rivalry similar to the werewolves and vampires but between freshwater and saltwater people. They believe they shouldn’t be together because of this. Unlike how the werewolves and vampires have resolved their long history of prejudice, there are still freshwater and saltwater monsters that believe these anti-fibbian morals should still apply, Gil’s parents for example. In the webisodes, we get a really close glimpse at their relationship and how Lagoona is always interested in meeting Gil’s parents. Naturally, Gillington is completely negative about this idea. What I think the fandom confuses this for is the fact he doesn’t really like Lagoona. But the thing is, he DOES. His parents have just completely implanted a fear onto their own child to the point Gil does not want her to go through the uncomfortable situation of meeting his parents because he’s incredibly aware of their anti-fibbian morals. Monster High fans are very quick to say these (completely reasonable) reactions are what make him a horrible boyfriend for Lagoona. The thing is people need to realize he isn’t the WORST boyfriend. He’s still trying his hardest to make sure Lagoona knows how he feels towards her and she realizes that almost everytime. I have every reason to believe the worst Manster in the fandom has to be Manny Taur. He is completely sexist in like every movie he’s in and nobody cares. It does not matter if he’s a “dumb jock” stereotype, it’s still 10x worse than whatever Gil is capable of doing. As far as we know, Gil’s morals are staying put and he is never going to let his parent’s long overdue morals actually get to him.
Plenty of interracial relationships in real life have seen better days. When people started the Oxford Study, it completely ruined the idea of interracial couples in general. It has fed people the idea that using stereotypical labels is okay when it really isn’t, and although people much like Lagoona and Gil continue to stay together, it doesn’t erase the amount of discrimination they get everyday. It’s incredibly deteriorating to one’s mental health and can possibly ruin the relationship for both parties. You can immediately tell who is quick to shame an interracial couple in the real world when they decide to degrade Lagoona and Gillington’s relationship without a genuinely valid reason.
Before you choose to judge, please take the time to look into someone else’s perspective of life.
