So I recently started working at a nursing home/assisted care facility type place. I work as a housekeeper, so doing laundry and other random cleaning. Today, I was putting laundry away back for one of the patients and they asked me to take them to the bathroom. Once again, I am a housekeeper, not a CNA, so I am unqualified to take anyone to the bathroom or do anything besides housekeeping. So, I did what I thought would be the best choice and let a CNA know. I had never met or seen this CNA before and tried to be as polite as I could. The conversation went like this:
Me: "hey, I'm sorry to bother you but (patient's name) in room (room number) asked for help to use the bathroom."
CNA: "oh yeah they can just press the help button."
Me(knowing that they probably wouldn't press the button and it was maybe out of reach otherwise they wouldn't have asked me for help, also I had told them I would get someome so they were waiting on me): "idk if they can press the button, they just asked me for help"
CNA: "well why cant they press the button?"
Me: "idk i don't think they can and they asked me for help and I cant help so I thought you could"
CNA: "why wouldn't they be able to press the button?"
This convo went on for another like 30 seconds while I stood there flabbergasted and the CNA sat with her phone in her hand. For context, she was literally sitting on Snapchat when this happened, so its not like I was interrupting any important tasks. She was giving me attitude and asking why the patient wouldn't be able to press the help button even after I explained that I was just in there and they asked for help so that's why I went to her. Finally, after what felt like minutes of me begging this lady to go see if the patient needed help, she agreed to go look in their room. Also, this has happened before as patients usually confuse me for a CNA and I usually tell any CNA that's around that the people need help and they usually thank me and go help them, so I thought this was a normal occurrence.
Its not like I witnessed neglect or anything worth reporting, and I don't even know if this is appropriate for me to post. But I was just so annoyed at this CNA bc she legit was doing nothing and refused to listen to me when I was just trying to be helpful. I know im not a CNA, and again I am somewhat new, so idk if you aren't supposed to listen to housekeepers or only see people if they press their help button, which sounds like a stupid rule anyway. Anywho, I rlly hope the patient was able to use the bathroom and I hope this CNA lady gets her attitude in check. Pmo bc she's prob getting good money to sit on her butt on Snapchat all day.
