Critique my deck plan!

Hi everyone. Planning to build a covered porch soon. Personal project. What do you think?

The outer posts will continue upward to support a roof. We'll most likely do a tin roof with the other side attached to the hoise. I plan to notch the 6x6 posts for a single 2x10 of the 2ply beam, and thru bolt the beam to the post.

The center posts will be double notched to receive the center drop beam. Joists will be 16' through to the other side, except the outer edges where the posts will continue upward.

Would you further reinforce the half of the beam that isn't resting in the notch of the outer posts? Sister a 2x6 down to the footers? Add an additional ledger board under the beams or use some Simpson Strong-ties?

I'd prefer if the posts went all the way to the roof. But open to suggestions. Thanks!

Advice on a 24'x16' covered porch -- specifically the 6x6 posts

Hey everyone,

First time posting on reddit. First time pretend-gineer. Please excuse the bad drawing, it is not complete but I just want to give the idea of what I'm going for. This is my personal project.

I'm wanting to build a large covered porch. 24' wide, 16' deep. I will have columns halfway along the 16' run to support the center, so each 2ply beam will be sitting on a post and supporting an 8' joist span, with the center beam supporting both sides*. Joists will be 2x8 @ 16 OC. I'm aiming to have all outer posts support the roof.

Looking for some tips on how to go about securing the 2ply 2x10 beams to the 6x6 posts that will support the roof. I plan on running 6x6 posts from my concrete footers, secured using the Simpson ABA66Z post base or like, to support the roof roughly 13'-15' high off the ground. The deck will be nearly 6' off the ground in some spots.

For the 2 center posts, those will be notched and beams secured appropriately. But I can't find much of a solid answer on how to have a 6x6 post support both the deck beams and the roof. If you notch out 3" for the 2ply beam, that doesn't leave enough strength for supporting the roof.

I've read about 2ply hangers, but that seems odd to have your beams supported by hardware alone. I've read about sister-ing (?) a 2x6 from the concrete up alongside the 6x6 to support the 2ply beam. I've read some would just stack a separate post on top of the deck to support the roof, but that sounds like it removes lateral stability and still relies on hardware and strapping to join the two 6x6 posts.

  1. What would y'all do if you had to build a 24'x16' porch? Would you change my plans entirely?
*2) Is a 2ply beam good enough for an 8' joist span on either side, while also being supported by a column how I have it drawn?

I am doing my best to read joist/beam span charts and load calculations, and research enough information to do this properly. I am indeed an amateur and I understand that. I am doing this out of passion, because we are out of money, and because our experience with the professional lately have been subpar across the board. I want to do this right so please help guide me if you can!

Thank you
