S4 Ending for Narcisse

Throughout the show, there are some things that we either see or hear about that happened off-screen, like the order Rothstein gave to Luciano, Lansky, and Siegel to try and take out Gyp Rosetti with Siegel as the shooter posing as the paper boy and Rothstein’s death, which they don’t show but we know happened between 1924-1931.

This is just a theory that can’t be proven or disproven, but it would align with Nucky’s nature and ability to manipulate people into doing what he wants by offering something that they want.

Nucky couldn’t stand Narcisse, wanted him out of Atlantic City, and used his favor from Richard to try to have him killed, even though it failed. After Eli killed Toliver and Richard accidentally killed Chalky’s daughter, the BOI stopped Nucky at the train station looking for Eli, and the next scene shows Hoover forcing Narcisse to become an informant to supply the bureau with information about Marcus Garvey.

Nucky is always reading the newspaper and he knew that prior to his appointment as BOI Director, Hoover was the head of the DOJ’s Radical Division and was prosecuting political agitators, anarchists, and communists. He knew Narcisse was associated with Marcus Garvey and UNIA and that the BOI couldn’t resist having someone that close to one of their targets under their control, and providing them with information about Narcisse’s criminal rackets would’ve given them leverage.

Throughout S4, the only time Hoover even pretended to give a shit about prosecuting bootleggers was during the celebration dinner after he was sworn in. He told Toliver he was far more concerned with prosecuting Marcus Garvey, Emma Goldman, and Cyril Briggs than trying to build a conspiracy case against bootleggers.

Given the sequence of events, do you think it’s possible that Nucky was able to get Narcisse out of Atlantic City by telling the BOI about his association with Marcus Garvey and UNIA and what criminal activities he was involved in, which Hoover brought up during their 1-sided conversation?

Prohibition-era Music

The show paid a lot of attention to detail, whether with the boardwalk and other scenery, the clothing, the cars, and the lingo, but one of my favorite aspects of the show was the music.

A few episodes started with songs like S2E1 with After You Get What You Want, S2E10 with Strut Miss Lizzie, and S3E1 with There’ll be Some Changes Made, and some had them later in the episode like Some of These Days in S1E9, Farewell Daddy Blues in S4E12, and My Buddy in S3E4. There were also other performances by Eddie Cantor, Edith Day, and Daughter among others.

What are some of your favorite songs from the series?

Season 27: Chief Tynan

I’ve seen a few posts about Tynan and while I understand that she wanted to buy Benson’s loyalty with a promotion which she turned down, I don’t see why she was so desperate to get her out of the SVU commander position.

She obviously expected loyalty from her subordinates and did favors when she could, but if her motive for getting Benson to a desk job or later suspended was to protect herself from her corruption being exposed, it doesn’t make any sense.

Whatever she helped Griffin’s father cover up wasn’t related to a sex crime or an SVU cold case, and Tynan was no idiot and had to see that she was alienating Griffin after being his “rabbi” in the department by going after Benson, which ironically led to him giving Benson the info Tynan wanted to keep secret and Tynan losing her protégé’s loyalty to Benson.

The first time she took her badge and gun was after Benson refused to violate the Rape Shield law for the corrupt, or at least biased judge, and given the circumstances, it would’ve gone nowhere had she tried since Benson was following the law while the judge was ignoring it.

The second time was at the hospital after SVU and a tactical team arrested a serial killer who had just abducted another child, and even though they had appropriate backup, Griffin and one of the other officers were shot in the line of duty, which wasn’t Benson’s fault. The man had killed multiple children and was about to kill another, and chief or not, I can’t see any reason why Benson would get in trouble for leading the operation to arrest him even if the serial killer shot at the police to avoid apprehension.

Going after a captain of a unit with the highest clearance rate in the NYPD who had numerous commendations and solved countless high-profile cases for petty nonsense would never succeed, and while I don’t like to bring up race, it seems highly unlikely that the NYPD would agree to suspend a white captain with a stellar record because the new Black woman chief wanted her suspended for:

  1. Not violating the Rape Shield Law.
  2. Rescuing an abducted child and catching a desperate serial killer who shot at the police trying to arrest him.

Rollins

There are a few episodes where Rollins gets on my nerves, but she really annoys me in the episodes S19E18 “Service“ and S27E11 “Career Psychopath.”

In Service, she found out that her boyfriend cheated on her with an escort and took it out on the victim who was a prostitute that was assaulted by a senior NCO after she had consensual sex with a young private. She treated her like a money-hungry slut and even though she eventually apologized, she was completely unprofessional.

In Career Psychopath her actions were pretty similar. She was attacked by some lunatic on her anniversary with Carisi and SVU eventually found out that Ruby Messner was the getaway driver for the guy that worshipped her brother Henry. She knew that Ruby was abused and had her whole family murdered but couldn’t control herself in the interrogation room or after when Benson pulled her out and told her to get a grip.
