Since Satan can’t create outcomes apart from human choice or God’s allowance, scripture refers to him “like a god” with a lower-case g. This should not be overlooked. A biblical worldview does not support the idea of Satan possessing autonomous authority to grant fame, fortune, or power in exchange for a human soul. His power is real but limited. Ultimate sovereignty belongs to God alone, who rules in heaven and earth and grants authority according to His will as stated in Danel 4:17.

This raises another important question. Is it sin or the devil that the unbeliever is directly serving? Going back to Romans 6:16, which states “you are slaves to the one you obey” (NIV). Is obeying your sinful nature the equivalent of directly obeying the devil? The short answer to this is no. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, humans do not need the outside influences of the devil to sin against God. We are born into sin with a fallen nature and need a deliverer.

Many people will refer to 1 John 5:19 as confirmation that Satan operates as God over the earth and humanity. This verse states that the “whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (ESV). Let’s consider the biblical context of the term power used in this passage. It is understood to be a reference to the devil’s ability to deceive and influence, rather than to sovereign dominion and authority typically associated with a God or Lord.

There are other things to consider with this passage. It is important to note that some translations use "the evil one" (NIV, ESV), others use "wickedness" (KJV). The Greek term tō ponērō can be interpreted as either a personal being (the evil one) or a concept (wickedness). This should cause us to pause, because it raises legitimate interpretive questions. We need to consider the real possibility that this passage is not a singular reference to the devil. It could very well be that John was suggesting the whole world lies in a general state of evil, moral corruption, sin, and/or wickedness (Ncube, 2025). Which makes sense when you consider the concept of humanity being born into sin, and it not being an environmental or genetic transference.

The phrase “of the evil one” is not noted in the original Greek in that manner. So, it remains debated whether it is truly a reference to a solo being (Satan) or a collective state of wickedness within the fallen world. Given that this passage remains debated among theologians, we should move more cautiously towards a theological position of certainty on one narrow interpretation of Satan as an individual ruler over our world.

This brings further doubt to the concept of the devil literally having “God-like” control and authority over the inhabitants of the earth. If sin is the fundamental reason the world lies under evil influence, then aren’t unbelievers enslaved to the sin they are born with, and only secondarily subject to Satan’s influence?

When the great temptation occurred, both players, Jesus and Satan, fully understood what was at stake. They were very familiar with one another. This is a very important element that should not be overlooked. Let me illustrate how absurd it was for the devil to tell Jesus he had authority over all the world, its kingdoms, and glory as he claimed in Luke 4:6. The devil quotes scripture so we can assume both of them were familiar with Daniel 4:17 that states The Most High rules in the kingdoms of men, and he is the one who decides who gets a position or not.

Then we have Jesus himself saying, “There is no truth in him.” and "he is a liar, and the father of it” we can conclude from this that there is not a single ounce of truth within Satan. Of course, he can quote the truth in God’s words as he did in the great temptation. But that was not an original thought of his, as he cannot originate any truth; he distorts it.

Jesus knew just like you, and I need to know that the devil and his wicked cohorts speak lies, and nothing they say or insinuate should be believed. Need I remind you again that both Christ and Satan knew that God rules within the Kingdom of men? Jesus knew the full extent and limitations of the devil’s power, and Satan knew Jesus had the run down on him as well. But the devil figured Jesus had been fasting and was at weakened state, so why not try to exploit the situation with temptations filled with twisted truth.
