Weekly Worldbuilding #6: Kobold Bande

A bande is a social organization that is exclusive only among Kobolds, consisting of hundreds to thousands of individual Kobold families and individuals. These bandes are clan/guild-like associations that function as a community that is dedicated to a specific profession and or niche. Kobolds bandes are structured hierarchically, with the elders usually on the top as community leaders. Bandes serve as a powerful sense of identity among Kobolds, underneath service to their dragon lord. In imperial cities, a Kobold bande is easy to recognize by the bande's coat of arms adorned on buildings.

Kobolds bandes are dominant in cities ruled directly by dragons, with a bande occupying an entire city block, with the neighbourhood usually named after the bande. They are associated with the royal authority of dragons, cooperating with their rulers. Bandes are influential in urban politics in draconic cities, electing mayors while staffing key bureaucratic positions and civil service. Bandes are usually composed professional associations of workers, artisans, or craftsmen that oversee the practice of their particular craft. They also serve as worker guilds, such as for servants in draconic royal palaces or among urban workers. Bandes also wield control over prices, wages, hiring workers, among other things. Although to be recognized as a bande to be given such rights, a Kobold bande must be given royal assent by a dragon monarch to be legitimate.

Life in a Kobold bande is communal and very socialized. Everything is communal in a bande, with dinners eaten together in a communal hall, marriages as public affairs, and a general lack of privacy between Kobolds. In the private sphere, a Kobold couple usually possess a single room in a bande complex dedicated to sleep and intimate private affairs. Kobold bande culture varies among upper and lower castes, but both castes share similarities in emphasizing community over the individual. For instance, lower caste Kobolds tend to live in collective quarters, while upper caste Kobolds live aren’t as communal, usually living in a monastic lifestyle in a dragon’s palace or owning a personal house/apartment while still having a powerful communal culture with their fellow bandemates.

In the world of dragondom, wyverns are a draconic species and are distant cousins of true dragons. Wyverns are defined by their two hind legs and two wings that also serve as limbs. Unlike true dragons, wyverns cannot breathe fire, nor do they have sapience, although they are highly intelligent for being a feral animal. Wyverns can also be tamed, but only by Kobolds due to their draconic nature, allowing them to bond with a wyvern. Although training a wyvern for controlled flights requires lots of training and patience on a Kobold’s part. Once tamed, wyverns are useful to Kobolds for travel (since they cannot ride true dragons) and for sporting activities.

Right now, we can see a Kobold riding a wyvern over the cloudy skies. This rider’s name is Krall, and he is an upper-caste Kobold who lives in a countryside university town. The wyvern he rides is a large male Gray Mountain Wyvern, which he named Machtus, measuring around 30-35 feet from snout to tail. Krall participates in his university’s wyvern racing team and is currently doing a solo training session with Machtus. Riding a wyvern is similar to riding a horse, requiring a saddle and harness, although Krall has to wear a belt around his waist, which is tied to the harness straps to make sure he stays secure. As Machtus dashes through the air, Krall feels a rush of adrenaline, already anticipating intense races and future victories with Machtus.

Fritz first met Amelia at a festival, and while this wasn't first time he hung out with a female Kobold at the town festival, this time, it was different. As a young adult Kobold, Fritz had already begun to view his female counterparts not only as fellow clutch-mates, but as a future wife, and Amelia saw it the same way to Fritz as a husband. However, Fritz and Amelia did not confess these feelings initially, enjoying the entertainment at the festival.

Their first night together at the festival was defined by small talk and laughter, but by the end of the night, sitting together in a secluded part of the festival, Fritz confessed his feelings for her, and Amelia confessed the same for her feelings to Fritz. Looking at each other's eyes, they slowly went in for a kiss, their snouts meeting each other's, and nudging their foreheads together as an act of mutual love.

Now openly in love with each other, Fritz offered Amelia to stay the night in his room, which was not that far away from the festival grounds. Amelia eagerly agreed, and after a brief walk down the town streets whilst holding claws together, they arrived to his bande's communal living quarters. In here was his room, a small hole in the wall that had nothing much, only a single bed as the only real piece of furniture inside of it.

However, this was more than enough for Fritz and Amelia, who held each other in a cuddling embrace as they rested on his bed, closely pressing against one another whilse they held claws. As they enjoyed each other's presence, they both internally fantasied about their future together, be it marriage, living together happily, and even potential hatchlings. As both Fritz and Amelia dozed off, they would have the best sleep of their lives.

Bashenror was one of the most powerful dragon monarchs of the past, uniting the dragondoms under his leadership, one of the few dragons to full off such a feat, and conquered all the non-dragon kingdoms and empires of the continent.

Born as a black dragon, he was known originally by his hatch name of Erebus, although he gave himself the title of Bashenror during the peak of his conquests. When he was a young adult, the dynasty he was a member of was wiped out during an intra-dragon war, with him being left as the sole survivor. He would be taken into by another dragon dynasty after this, although he was a no-name low-ranking warrior initially. Although his life took a new turn when he received a vision from Tiamat. In this vision, Tiamat would tell him that he was chosen to lead the dragons into a new golden age and that he shall reign be the dragon lord of all dragon lords. After this vision, Bashenror fully committed himself to whatever fate Tiamat held for him.

Bashenror would rise up the hierarchy in the dynasty he was a part of, with his competitors perishing in intra-dragon wars or being outmaneuvered by his political genius. By the time he was an adult, he became the great dragon lord of the dynasty and sought to fulfill his divine mission to unify dragondom. Through a series of wars and dynastic intrigue, Bashenror would bring the majority of the draconic dynasties under his authority, promising great territories and divine blessing if dragon lords joined him. After this, Bashenror launched his conquest campaign against the non-dragon races, which lasted for hundreds of years, with the result being the majority of the known world falling under his domain.

With Bashenror's empire ruling the known world, he would be the supreme lord in this empire, with lesser great dragons lords co-ruling under his reign. As centuries passed, Bashenror grew larger and larger, reaching between 400 to 500 feet from snout to tail and becoming one of the most powerful dragon the species had ever known at that point. He would reign for over half a century when he passed away, being over 1,200 years old at that point. Although dragon legend goes that he did not merely die, but abdicated his mortal authority in the hopes of ascending among Tiamat by hibernating and increasing his mana power.

While Bashenror's empire was divided and partitioned among his feuding successors, the mountain palace where he is kept remains undisturbed despite a thousand of years passing by, as no dragon dares to disturb his slumber, not even his enemies.

Being part of a civilization, dragons have culture and customs that define their species. Draconic culture and custom reflect expressions of strength and power, core characteristics that define dragons. Here are some examples, ranging from dragon mock-fighting, sport hunting, and literature.

In dragon culture, it is natural and healthy for dragons to fight one another, although fighting in dragon culture is not meant for killing one another, but to show off power through strength and strategic prowess. Dragon fighting varies, ranging from aerial combat to the use of breath weapons on the ground or tackling/wrestling, or a combination of them all. Among royal dragons, duels are a common practice used to settle disputes or done just for sport. Since dragons are a honor based culture, and sore losers are frowned upon. If a dragon loses fair and square to another dragon, it is honorable to accept defeat and submit. Play fighting is also commonplace among dragons, especially for hatchlings and young dragons.

While hunting animals in the wilderness is no longer a critical skill for survival as it was in the past for dragons, but is now more of a sport for royal dragons and nobles (akin to how hunting was for European aristocrats in our world) since royal dragons now have a stable and steady diet through livestock tribute they receive from the territories they rule over. Dragon nobles usually possess a tract of land, such as a forest or a valley, that would be dedicated as a hunting ground where they would use traditional hunting techniques to take down prey. Dragons prefer to attack their prey from the sky, perching on a high peak like a mountain, and when locating prey, fly off and then attack. This can vary, with dragons using either pounce attacks, attacking with their claws, or using their sharp teeth.

In terms of literature, a popular genre in draconic literature is based around Bashenror the Great and the first great dragon kings. For instance, there is the Bashenror Romance (akin to Alexander Romance in our own world) that is an mythologized account of the life and exploits of Bashenror the Great. The chronology covers Bashenror's life from his early life up to when he united dragondom, and Bashenror, documenting his conquests and his reign up to the end of his life. Among Kobolds, a philosophical work that is popular in universities and schools is the Tinvaak. The Tinvaak was written by a Kobold scribe that, unlike the more legalistic Ymmute that covers draconic legal system, is told in a dialogue-style format between Bashenror and another dragon (like Plato’s or Confucius’s works) and discusses various philosophical concepts and ideas in draconic society.
