I just can't get my head around Tropico 6 and how the economy system works...

I'm a fairly experienced Tropico player, however I've migrated/upgraded from Tropico 3 and 4. I wasn't expecting 6 to overly familiar, like I was expecting it to be a little more complex and in-depth, but WOW! This game feels so needlessly over complicated!

I don't get the economy system in this game at all. Even in sandbox, moreover even with a creative mode option on (unlimited mandate) I just can't seem to make any profit whatsoever, despite having like 3 gold mines, plenty of teamsters, plenty of resources overall, but I can't seem to do anything except watch my money drain more and more.

I feel like I've tried everything. Eg. Refusing to build housing, ignoring demands, building another dock early on, not building anything for a while other than industry and production buildings, buying extra trade slots to boost my income. Nothing so far has worked...

What the heck am I missing? What does this game want from me other than (to me it seems anyway) just completing mission after mission regardless of how shit my economy is? At this point I'm half considering just doing a sandbox with unlimited money and just focusing on missions because it seems that's all the game wants me to do, and the only thing that's possible to do!
