PSA: Costco is *open* (in most areas) Civic Holiday Monday

In past years there's been confusion about whether Costco is open on the first Monday in August (known variously as [name of province] Day, Heritage Day, Terry Fox Day, Natal Day, Simcoe Day and Colonel By Day among other names in Ontario, or just the Civic Holiday). In some threads here and elsewhere, some have assumed it should be closed because it's a holiday when most other stores are closed and because it's not specifically mentioned either way on the Costco website.

However, I can say from past personal experience that locations in Ontario are open on the Civic Holiday.

Moreover, the Costco Canada website states:

>Regular hours apply unless otherwise specified.

The only locations I can find that specifically note an upcoming closure on August 3, 2026, are in New Brunswick for, well, New Brunswick Day, while Nova Scotia locations are listed as having reduced hours from noon to 6pm. (Also the location in St. John's, NL will be closed on Regatta Day, which – weather permitting – will probably be Wednesday the 5th.)

There's a separate page on the Costco Business Centres website that specifically notes that business locations will be open on the Civic Holiday, but with no deliveries in most areas.

Municipal election attack ad season has started early (Willowdale flyer)

Just got this flyer from a candidate in Willowdale attacking the incumbent councillor, Lily Cheng, over her supposed involvement in a drug policy the city (with support of the police chief) was proposing three years ago (and the feds turned down, and hasn’t really been discussed since). I preferred a different councillor candidate last time around but I also don’t think this was a fair attack for a process started before the current mayor took office.

Tagged NSFW out of an abundance of caution due to the subject matter and imagery of the flyer. [edit: it looks like this tag has been removed by the subreddit mods]

I cropped off a URL at the bottom of the flyer, for a page that purports to be a petition to reverse the city policy (with more info about the attacking candidate underneath).
