I understand it’s meant to be somewhat ambiguous but I think it’s heavily implied that Chris in fact was killed not Jayden.
The detectives seem to be primarily expressing looks of relief and perhaps mild sadness. I believe if the hostage was shot there would be more disappointment, anger and sadness.
I think the people would appear to be slightly more concerned reading their notifications if the hostage had died. Even if it was performative or only for a moment, where as if the kidnapper died that would illicit the more “oh well” reaction we see.
The reaction from the Smithereens COO and CEO would have been different. More like “OH F*!” vs the brief “well that’s over” responses we got. It would very much not be over for them if Jayden was killed. Legal was there and the CEO was involved, they would be trying to get ahead of a lawsuit from the family and trying to spin out positive PR.
The officer appears to have Chris perfectly lined up in her viewfinder before the shot. Then we only heard one shot (after the first attempt when they were both still alive). If they killed Jayden not Chris, Chris would have then shot himself or they would have continued shooting bc he would still be in the vehicle armed.
It’s guess it’s possible the second shot hit them both but I doubt it. If Jayden was shot they would have rushed over to administer aid.
Rewatching some of my faves and didn’t notice these details the first time, thoughts?
