Have you ever had a pen clog or get damaged from mixed inks, or have you been doing it for years without issues?
Curious to hear real experiences.
This is my Sailor 1911 standard in Black and gold trim, 14k medium nib, and I think I have found my grail in it.
I do not mean to offend anyone, but in my opinion, a grail pen doesn’t have to be expensive or rare. It is simply a pen that you genuinely enjoy using and feel satisfied with every time you write. For me, a grail pen is more about personal comfort, writing pleasure, and connection with the tool than about price or status. It’s the pen that fits your hand and your preferences so well that it feels naturally “right” to you. Not just the pen model, but the exact pen. Not just the model, but the exact individual pen—the specific nib and unit that works best for you. (Even within the same model and nib size, there can be small variations).
My experience with fountain pens is very limited, I would admit. I haven’t tried most high-end pens yet. Up to now, my collection includes Pilot Custom 74 (SF and F), Sailor 1911 Light (MF), Sailor 1911 Jr (MF), Lamy Al-Star (EF, F, and M), Pilot Kakuno (F and M), Metropolitan (F and CM), and several Jinhaos and Wing Sungs.
But this exact pen, Sailor 1911s has touched my heart like no other pen has.
Let me explain:
I bought this pen brand new, for approximately 180 USD. I live in a underdeveloped south Asian country where spending this much money on a pen is craziness. For me personally, as a student without a wealthy background, it was a significant purchase.
When I first got this pen, writing for a minute, I was amazed and a quite a bit disappointed at the same time about how smooth it was. I was like: wait, sailor is meant to be feedbacky, right!
I had heard a lot about Sailor's famous feedback. The previous two pens were too much feedbacky and too thin writer for my taste, so I thought a bigger size would be less feedbacky, and I bought both the pens used,so I thought something might be wrong with these. But didn't expect to be this much less feedbacky!
I could be hating sailor after those two pen, but actually from the very beginning I was I search for a pen which would have feedback and control in it, this is because my handwriting is not good, I thought a controlled pen will make it better.
However, after using it for a few days, I started to appreciate it more. I realized the feedback is still there, but very subtle. And for me, this level is perfect. Gradually, I began to really enjoy writing with it, and over time I started to love it.
It feels like the tipping of the pen feels exactly aligned with the paper when I write with it.
Though this pen is very smooth, but gives a controlled feeling, not like it's holding me back.
I can't describe it with words properly.
It fits my hand perfectly even without posting. Although it is a relatively small pen, my hands are also not very large, even though I am 6 feet tall (Thanks God).
The nib is not soft/bouncy at all. This is what I love too. This thing has been my complain with custom 74s that they were too bouncy and not enjoyable for my as I write quite fast. I love this stiff nib.
This is love right?
You even love those qualities that might be considered drawbacks for others.
However, to be realistic, cons are also here . The built quality doesn’t feel very premium for the price. There are seam lines on the grip section. They do not affect writing, and they are not very noticeable unless observed closely under soft light, but I feel this is something that could have been refined by the manufacturer.
