30D to R5mkii - it's a bit of a leap.

I posted a couple of weeks ago asking about moving on from my trio of 30D to something new. I ended up going 'full beans' and getting the R5mkii. I must admit the learning curve has been way way more challenging than I expected. Almost as painful as the cost of the memory cards for the camera, makes the camera look cheap.

Photos are just some 'snaps' - never done bird photos before, I'm more urban and sports, but had the time today so just took some local. Last one I missed focus, but was the 'best' composition and I'm not ashamed to say I'm still learning how to 'tame the beast' of the R5mkii. It's got a lot of smart stuff in there, but it can also do dumb shit when the even dumber shit behind the eye cup doesn't ask nicely ;-)

Thanks to those that offered advice. Now, just need to work out what second body to get... Still thinking 5DmkIV.....

Dinosaur finally thinking of joining the 20th century ;-)

Ok, perhaps not quite that bad, but I am thinking of finally upgrading but totally torn by what to go to. Currently I have 3s 30D bodies, a 17-40 F4L, 70-200 F2.8 L, and a 50mm 1.8. Plus a stack of CF cards. My battery inventory has dwindled. I bought the first 30D new, same time as the lenses, and then the second body second hand 2 years later and the last one about 7 years ago for $100 including a 'throw away' lens.

I used to do semi-pro (as in paid but not enough to recoup the cost of kit) sports photography of cycling, triathlon and running events. But my main interest is in urban scenes, natural water scenes, abstract photos and with a desire to do a lot more long exposure night time photography. I want to also do more fine art prints. In the past I had a quality HP printer that was great for B&W prints to A4, but that died a decade ago and I didn't replace.

One of the cameras has got a slightly sticky shutter, and one has an occasionally intermittent shutter button (from shooting a wedding on a beach, thank god for the other 'spare' body.)
And so the imminent need to replace the batteries means that I am thinking of upgrading. The progress in printing means that whilst in the past the 30D was fine, I think that the resolution even uncropped is noticeable now.

So my quandary is between a 5dmk4, an R5 or an R5mk2. In all cases I know I'm up for new memory cards and batteries. I'm also aware that going to a full frame means that I'm potentially going to find that the 70-200 will appear a bit short without a 1.4x, but I don't see me doing events again in the near future so less of an issue. Which is also why I've got both the R5 and R5mk2 on my list - based on reviews then the main reason to go to the R5mk2 is fast sports tracking. Now I have kept the 30D for 20 years, it's my nature to buy quality and then get good value from it. My car is the same age... However, as per the lenses, then I am incredibly fortunate that I am not budget constrained, but I also don't want to spend money pointlessly - would rather spend any saving on a weekend away to shoot, or to pay for some prints. But equally, I can see this being another camera I keep for 20 years. Having turned 50 a few years back then I'd be surprised if I was pushing to get into the latest/greatest camera when I'm in my 70s.

I have zero interest in video, hence the 5D could meet all my needs. I wouldn't need any new lenses, and could even get a 400 prime for not a lot of $$$. Indeed I could replace all my 30d with second hand 5Dmk4 for the cost of one R5mk2, not that I would, but I'd not rule out picking up a second one in a year's time if I went this way as when shooting urban then I always found I restricted myself to just using the one lens and skipping some shots, rather than when I have two bodies round my neck I alternate frequently for the better composition.

So sorry, very long post, but equally a 'should I go to mirrorless from DSLR' has been done to death. And therefore massive thanks to anyone that made it this far. As a reward next week's winning lottery numbers are two, eight, fourteen, twenty seven and sixty four.

MetService thinks there's a moderate risk of thunderstorms this AM.

So you know, watch out for them......

But what the actual. Was one about 5:15 that literally shook my house for 10 seconds. One way to make sure everyone is awake and no-one sleeps in for a Monday AM.

Driving license renewal - previous stroke

I had a stroke just over 2 years ago. Had a mandatory stand down of 4 weeks, and in reality I waited closer to 2 months before I went to see my GP and he gave me a note confirming I was fit to drive. No issues since then.

Just doing my license renewal as it's coming up to 10 years, and it's looking like I'll need a new letter from my GP. Asks if I've had any of list of issues (stroke is on there) and then if any of those in last 5 years impacted my ability to drive safely (yes, during the 4 week automatic standdown post stroke). So I'm reading that I WILL need a new letter from GP. Just seems a bit odd that I didn't legally need a letter to restart driving after the 4 weeks, but now 2 and a bit years later then I do. But if I had another 3 years on the license before renewal then I'd be fine until then, and wouldn't need one after that.

Anyone else post stroke had similar and what did you do?

Context, I am back working full time, was a congenital heart defect that has since been repaired, and having got a new marathon PB last year I'm 7 weeks out from what will hopefully be another one.
