SPD/CDU plans to ban socialization of housing on the state level
In 2021 a initiative to socialize parts of the largest real estate firms in Berlin won a majority. Since then the state government has been dragging its feet to implement it. Meanwhile the initiative drafted their own law on how to implement this and is currently gathering support to have a 2nd vote directly on the law itself. The governments of Bavaria already threatened the initiative with a ban.
The now proposed law would strip the states of the right to socialize housing on their own, leaving this power with the federal level. Curiously there are several state constitutions which have their own articles allowing expropriation, which would be nullified by this law, making this law somewhat questionable from a constitutional perspective. There are going to be elections in Berlin in autumn and the spd is already trailing basically every other relevant party in the polls and several state spd members have voiced their disappointment with this law after the performance of the federal SPD had a massive impact on the Socdems loosing the state elections in rhineland palatinate for the first time in 35 years.
The law is part of bigger package which also includes defanging the transparancy laws concerning access to government data and the more infamous sick leave permissions from the first day.
