How do you pace yourself on new playthroughs?

Started my third rerun, determined to finally 100% it. I got to horseshoe overlook, did the Uncle mission, and am now kinda wandering around hunting because I'm scared to rush the game. I know many in the community say that its best to do as much of the side content in chapter 2 as possible, but how do you pace yourself to make sure its done reasonably? Especially since so many of the mechanics are locked behind missions.

Thank you!
