Title: My boyfriend threw our promise ring at me in front of his friends as a “joke” and I don’t know how to feel

So this happened recently and I’m still trying to process it.

I was with my boyfriend and a couple of his friends. One of them asked why I wasn’t wearing my promise ring, and I said I just forgot. Then that same friend goes “it’s only ‘cause she doesn’t love you.” Instead of shutting it down, my boyfriend literally threw the ring at me in front of them like it was some kind of joke.

To make it worse, that same friend had already been making other disrespectful comments earlier (just generally out of line, including a sexualised joke in front of everyone). It wasn’t just a one-off thing.

I completely crashed out in the moment and was like “wtf was that?” and just stopped talking to my boyfriend after. He later said he didn’t realise how bad it was because he “wasn’t in tune,” which honestly doesn’t sit right with me because he did hear at least one of the inappropriate jokes that same friend made.

Apparently, when I walked off upset and crashed out at him for not standing up for me, he texted that friend (while literally shaking) telling him to be more respectful next time.

Then later that evening, when I was basically at my breaking point, he started crying and saying what he did was tasteless and that he doesn’t want to lose me.

I just feel really disrespected and embarrassed. Like… joking or not, that felt humiliating. And I don’t know if I’m overreacting or if this is actually as bad as it feels.

Would you guys consider this a reason to break up or just a really stupid mistake?

Also it’s a long distance relationship. I am in Belgium, he’s from Switzerland.
