Filing for Love is tackling an important work culture trope, “rumours”, in K-dramas, and I’m here for it!
I’m halfway through episode 3, and I have thoughts. Since this is ongoing, I’ll try to avoid spoilers. I think the investigative topics are important, and they are tackling issues that have irked me over the years about the Korean “work culture” as depicted in dramas. It often starts with a rumour, unconfirmed, sometimes playfully shared in bathrooms, cafeterias, staircases, and at office dinners. The undue obsession, “nosy” curiosity, false assumptions about people’s dating lives/relationships, and the spreading of false rumours about co-workers. This trope continues to vex me, and I’m glad they are finally addressing it here, as we often see no consequences for the offenders who start it. And by the time the truth is revealed, people’s lives are destroyed.
I’m looking forward to how they handle these cases.
