How Obsession scares you
Obsession is the scariest horror movie I’ve seen since Hereditary, and probably my favorite horror movie of the 2020s so far, as well as my favorite film of the year so far (Letterboxd lists the film as coming out in 2025 but it’s a 2026 movie for me). This movie is further proof that original movies aren’t dead, and that people will show up to go see these. I love seeing the discussions online about the films subtle themes and messaging. I also think Bear is one of the best written horror protagonists of all time. It’s a joke that horror movie protagonists would put themselves into dangerous situations because they’re fucking stupid. Well in Bear’s case…. yeah that’s true, but it’s a bit more than that. As the film progresses we start to see his true character we really start to see who the “obsessed” one is, and in one line he becomes truly irredeemable. It’s really good shit. But the thing I don’t see a lot of people talking about online, is how it keeps its tension and constantly keeps the audience on edge. In most horror movies I’ve seen, there’s always a point (or points) where the audience can breathe, when there’s no more danger. And the characters can just talk for a bit. I almost never got that with this movie, maybe I haven’t seen a lot of horror movies yet, but I can’t think of a time I was this on edge for this long. Ever since Bear broke that thing in half, my heart rate didn’t go down at all. It’s because the two of them were together in almost every scene. Even when she seemed “normal” I knew there was gonna be some point when she would just break and things would get fucked. Even in small moments, like when Bear is talking to Ian after their first night together, you can see her staring at them in back ground. AND SHE DOESN’T LOOK AWAY. And in the scenes she’s not in, it’s like her presence is still there, like with the reveal she cooked his cat for lunch. Whenever he was in the car by himself, i was so sure she was gonna pop on the other side of the glass. And she did when he was gonna read Sarah’s acceptance letter, I knew it was coming, but it still got me 😭. I couldn’t get a read on her at all and I had no idea what she would do next, I was constantly being surprised. This is also in part thanks in large part to Inde Navarrette’s performance that truly deserves an Oscar, and I hope to see her in more stuff in the future. So yeah let me know your thoughts on the movie I’ll be reading. Thx if you read the whole thing.
