Ohio AG returned my payment.. now what?
Idk if anyone can offer advice here, but I figured I would try.
At the end of February I began receiving calls from a collection agency claiming to be linked to the AG office. After lots of round about phone calls, I managed to speak to someone from the AG collections office. I had forgotten to pay off a $5000 debt to Kent State University from courses I took in 2024. Since it is a state university, they sent that to the AG. Now, they offset about $400 from my state tax return, but I still owed close to $7000 now to the AG. The woman from the AG (NOT THE COLLECTION AGENCY) told me the P.O. box address that I could mail a check to. About 2 weeks later, I get the check back with the memo stating "overpayment". The AG website shows a $0 balance, Kent State's payment portal shows that they were wired the amount and my balance is $0, and the debt is not showing up on any of my credit reports.
It's been about a month since the check was returned and my question is: did I somehow get out of this debt scot-free? I think it makes absolutely NO sense to call the AG and remind them that I owe money if they didn't want it the first time and are showing me that it's gone. I have saved all my receipts from Kent, and have a photo of the returned check, as well as a screenshot of the AG website showing my $0 balance. Should I just roll with it and if they ever contact me again, I can fight it with my receipts?
I appreciate any advice!
