Parental care and colony breeder fishes? Just trying to know new interesting species!

Pictures for reference and to grab your attention!

Hi everyone! I'm slowly settling in after I moved. I have a couple of empty 40-gallon tanks and assorted smaller ones.

Lately I'm thinking of setting up a few of them, and I'm still deciding what to put in. I'm interested in species that care for their young, and, if possible, can be kept in a breeding colony. Preferably not larger than 3 inches so I can provide enough space. I have no problems with species and biotope-like tanks. I want to hear recommendations and your opinions! You never know when you're going to discover your new favorite fish.

I plan to start a few shrimp colonies too, in my smaller tanks.

I've heard of cichlid shellies, chocolate gouramies, some catfish, splashing tetras? Please let me know if anyone has experience with those.

Hoping for your responses!!
