Hiii, getting gifted this tank! What can I put in it? 3 gallons

My mom is getting me this tank because I'm doing good rn and this is like the only chance at a pet for her house I'm gonna get lol

She knows basically nothing about fish, I would've preferred a 5 gallon honestly because I could've at least had a betta or a guppy but it's a gift so I'm gonna make do lol

I need something easy to take care of that won't cost me like all my money lol, I really want shrimp but I'm worried about how they'd do in this type of tank and how expensive they might be

I've taken care of fish like my entire life lol and I'm just starting to get better with making sure they're properly set up so I really wanna do this right

Any and all advice is welcome and needed!

Plant Recommendations for 10 Gal and 2.5 Gal

Hi all! Currently managing a 10 gallon community tank (pictured first) and building a 2.5 gallon shrimp tank.

The ten gallon features the following Aquatic plants - Eleocharis acicularis, Hellanthium tenellum 'Green', Dwarf Water Onion, and a Water Banana Plant (Nymphoides aquatica), with plans to add a floating Java Moss ring and a Java Fern. I was wondering if you have any other plant recommendations for the tank. The tank houses Ghost Shrimp, a school of Ember tetras, and some Pygmy Corydoras. It also has a ceramic shrimp hideout, silk leaves for pygmys and shrimp to rest on, and a Eucalyptus root. (with an adjustable heater and HOB sponge filter.

Also working on making a 2.5 gallon for neocaridina (Blue Dream or Jade Green, not sure yet). All it has for now is a Java Fern and a mini air pressure powered sponge filter; I want to add some Java Moss and some Marimo Moss Balls. Looking for recommendations here too!!

Let me know if you have any plant recommendations for either of these! Preferably unique/underrated ones.

Pretty enough; but what goes in it?

Hey everyone. I set up this happy little UNS 3G nano on my desk this week using an assortment of rocks from our local beaches and some leftover fertilized substrate and filter material. At the moment I have a small number of Ramshorn snails in there to keep the algae down but I’d like something a bit more dynamic. The stones are such a great opportunity for microhabitats that I’m trying to think of an occupant that could really take advantage of them. Bumblebee gobies come to mind, but I think the tank may be a bit small for even them (and I might have to change the substrate). I originally intended to get pea puffers, but I’ve rethought the wisdom of that because of the live/frozen food requirement, and because the tank is too small for them to be peaceful. Obvious choices are snails only, or a small number of Neocaridina sp. with some moss. Chili rasboras seem possible but it might be tough to keep them happy since I could only have a few. Thai micro crabs came to mind but they live very short lives. Any other cool ideas? I’m not really a Betta kind of aquarist, but maybe that could work… Thanks, all!

Past fish only guy starting a (first time live planting!) shrimp only tank, does everything sound/look good? Advice?!

Hey all! So I’ve kept fish in the past for 3-4 years and did incredibly well with them (Mollys, Small pleccos, and snails). I gave up the hobby due to school but decided to get back into it but go nano tank for a small but fun vibe on my desktop table!

I setup the tank about 3 days ago now and plan on letting it cycle 4 or more weeks until parameters are right for the lil shrimpy dudes.

I conditioned the water as usual, added Fluval Bio starter, a small 1mL dose of Flourish by Seachem and planted 1 x Java Moss, 1 x Anubias Nana, and 1 x Watersprite. I boiled cholla wood and added that as well! Today the sprite looks a little brown though near the roots and has like 2 black spots near the joints of 2 stems. The anubias also has a small spot on a leaf or two which almost looks rotted? I included pics of these for y’all.

Is that the melting people mention all the time? Will it bounce back I hope? I went out today and bought a simple Aquaeon LED clip on light to bring the PAR up a lil bit to 15-27 (average/peak) because the stock led just sucks, I knew it did. Just in case light problems are happening or would happen in the future. Didn’t want to go too crazy on the light though as these are apparently low-medium light/PAR plants?

I repotted the sprite into its own little isolated cup either holes and topped it up with gravel and a root tab at the bottom of the cup (root tab made by ThriveCaps).

Is there anything else I should be doing to get this jump started or just stay patient? I know my ammonia levels were kinda high yesterday, as well as nitrates but no nitrites… I feel like I’m missing something with this nano build and just wanna ask you experts for some advice on what I may or may not be doing right or wrong. Bunch of pictures included for y’all! Thanks!

Finally joined the club

Been wanting to for years. Set this 6.5G up yesterday. Hopefully these plants survive but I don’t really know what I’m doing yet. Happy with how it looks though.

Moving to dorms, what can I put in a 5 gal from my current set ups?

Title. I'm moving into college dorms and they only allow 5 gallon tanks. I was wondering what i can put into a 5 gallon from my current set up, to avoid rehoming some of them(where i live there are mainly chain stores so I'm hesitant to surrender them).

I've got 9 ember tetras, 3 nerites, and like 100 shrimp(guesstimate) spread out between a 10 and 20 gallon.

I am incredibly upset with myself..

I'm looking for a scarlet badis pair for a 5g...I should have got these when I first saw them before they sold..I'm devastated that I didn't order them as soon as I saw them and I'm very upset with myself.

Confusion over gallon sizes

Edit: many countries outside of the US use litres, so when I see gallons in here I convert to understand and it seems that is what many non US people are doing too. But we are likely converting the wrong gallon bc in places outside the US, Google assumes we are using imperial. I think many of us didn’t even realise the US used a different gallon, so didn’t know we were converting the wrong thing to litres! Anyway this is your warning: they’re talking about US gallons!!!!!!

OG post:
This might not be wholly relevant, so feel free to downvote and I can delete, but does this sub have any standardisation or etiquette when talking about tank sizes?

Because I’ve realised a lot of people talk about gallons, but US gallons are 20% smaller than imperial gallons and I’ve never seen somebody specify to which they are referring to? I’ve also got a sneaking suspicion this is a small part of the reason people frequently get into disagreements about what stock can go into what size tank, especially as we are talking about such small tanks where that 20% can make a fair difference. Two people can be saying gallon and mean different sizes eg.
10 US gallons ≈ 8 imperial gallons

So, am I missing the memo on what gallon we use? If there’s no standardisation, is it worth having one? Probably not but curious to see what you have to say about it!
(If you also saw this in aquariums, sorry! I’m confused in both 😅)

Will my plants recover?

New to keeping planted aquariums and I set up both a nano bowl situation and a 5.5 gallon tank at the same time. I split the plants between the aquariums and had some difficulties with the light on the larger tank for a while and used peroxide treatments in both for bladder snails that hitch hiked which I may have overdosed in the large tank. Now about 2 weeks from planting the two tanks have VERY different colors on both my dwarf baby tears and rotalas. Will the discolored plants survive? I have more tannins in the large tank but the plants themselves are definitely a different color. I've replaced the light today and hope for recovery but is that realistic at this point?

Both tanks are set up with RO water, aquasoil capped with aquarium sand, a squeeze of a friend's aquarium filter sponge, and some shrimp liquid minerals. The larger tank has a heater and very low flow filter for some circulation. The only other thing that should be alive in either tank is a single assassin snail each now that its been several days and a half water change since the peroxide.

Thank you in advance!

First filterless fish tank

Hi there, I’m based in NYC and I’m looking to set up a small filterless planted ecosystem. I’ve never owned a fish before, so I have no idea where to start! I was hoping you could point me in the right direction, what species would you recommend for a complete beginner who wants something low-maintenance and doesn’t want to use a filter? (And if i cant do that i can get a small fish tank with a filter, I just have a small nyc apartment)

New to the hobby - planted tank for Neocaridina cherry shrimp, does everything look okay?

Hey everyone just set up my first tank and would love some feedback. I have a 10 gallon with Fluval Stratum, two sponge filters, and a Fluval Sea EVO light(from old tank). For plants I have anacharis, pearlweed, moneywort and java moss on some Mopani driftwood.

I used API Quick Start and tap water conditioner. The water is pretty murky right now which I'm assuming is normal for a new tank with fresh Fluval Stratum? Both sponge filters are running and it seems to be clearing up slowly.

Planning to cycle for about 4 weeks before adding Neocaridina red cherry shrimp. Hoping the pearlweed will carpet over time without CO2.

My main questions are does this setup look good for Neocaridina, is the murky water normal and how long will it take to clear, can pearlweed carpet without CO2, and is Fluval Stratum okay for cherry shrimp? Also wondering if I'm missing anything important before adding shrimp.

Still need to get the API Master Test Kit but planning to grab that soon. Thanks!

Desk Tank

Hey everyone. I want a tiny shrimp tank for my desk. I work at a public school in LA. I was going to do a Walstad tank because the power goes out ALL the time. It's pointless to try for air pumps, filters, and heaters. My main concern is temp fluctuations. The air conditioner does not run at night. It's not on a thermostat. It's only on when we're there using the classroom. Would my shrimp be able to survive these fluctuations? Also, even though it's Louisiana, we do get the occasional cold snap. Most of the time the heater is on the fritz, but it only stays cold for a few days. I'm also open to snails or any other kind of creature you can think of that could survive the temp fluctuations in a small tank. I'm not totally new to aquariums. I just never had one in a place I couldn't control the environment.

My first tank!

What plants should I buy? Hoping to keep some Japanese rice fish or shrimps so it needs to be well-planted. Just set this up last night and waiting for it to cycle; will switch out for a better light at some point
