New to diesel … some questions still learning
This is my first diesel truck. 2018 3500 6.7 cummins 68rfe 200,000 km (I’m Canadian so 124,000 miles for my Americans) This may be silly but I like to know how to care for my things. I’m still learning as I go with this but just was wondering if you guys could share your knowledge of any “rules” of general/daily care I should be aware of if I’m missing anything.
I’ve heard they don’t like to be shut off cold - meaning no short trips then shutting off before reaching full temp. Is this true ?
Not deleted yet but plan on it in the future. For now I drive it nicely but give it some good throttle every day and it usually gets good highway driving weekly to help it from build up.
Exhaust brake is always on - auto.
Cold start the truck, let it run 1-2 min then high idle just over 1k and turn exhaust brake on full for warm up.
This truck is my daily so I’m not always gonna be towing with it, just heard people say it can take a lot of wear and tear from easy driving. For example I drive my kid to school in the morning that’s only a 5 min trip, should I be worried about cold start for 10 min warm up, drive for maybe 5 then shut off ? Anything I should be aware of to help longevity ?
If I’m out and about and can leave the truck running I will high idle it while I run in places instead of shutting off - is this correct mannerism for a diesel or am I overthinking it.
Appreciate any help.
