Hey everyone, I (24) was recently diagnosed in February after a fairly severe case of DKA. I had prolonged symptoms of frequent urination and constant thirst for many, many months before diagnosis. Considerable weight loss started to hit around October/November, though I’ve always been skinny while eating like shit in college and post grad which I just hoped was a good metabolism. The fruity breath came around January and what sent me to the urgent care (and eventually the ER) was Kussmaul breathing. All that being said I ended up having an A1C of 15.3 and likely had been living with it for some time.
When I first read about the honeymoon phase I assumed this is something I would go through as well, but now I am wondering if I experienced that while undiagnosed. Currently on 25 units of basal and a standard 1/10 unit to carb ratio for bolus. My insulin responses are very consistent and I’ve gotten a good handle avoiding highs and lows. I typically eat the same types of meals so I’ve been staying in range at a very high clip unless I eat out somewhere/am unsure of carbs and ingredients. Thus I’ve felt I’ve done a good job managing it in my short time living with this. However, I constantly wonder if my good numbers are due to the honeymoon and if shit is going to get a whole lot harder eventually (it is going to regardless but you get what I am saying).
Just willing to hear any testimonials, thoughts, etc from y’all. My PCP said I’m likely not producing any insulin but can’t take that as gospel, especially since not an endocrinologist. Any telltale signs I am or am not honeymooning?
