What is the actual ROI difference between a generic explainer video and a fully custom animated brand video, and has anyone measured it directly in their funnel?
We have been debating this internally for two months and I want to hear from people who have actually run both versions rather than relying on vendor case studies that are always going to show the custom option winning.
The generic explainer video argument is straightforward. Template-based video production is significantly cheaper and faster. The output is professional enough to communicate the product value proposition clearly. For a company at our stage the marginal improvement from a fully bespoke animated production may not justify the cost difference. The custom branded video argument is also real. A generic template-produced video communicates your message in a visual language that looks identical to every other company using the same template library. A custom animated production has a visual identity that is specific to your brand, your characters, your color system, and your narrative style. It builds brand recognition in a way that templates structurally cannot.
What I have not been able to find is honest data from founders or marketers who have tested both approaches on comparable traffic and measured the conversion difference directly. Landing page video tests, ad creative tests, or onboarding flow comparisons where the only variable was generic versus custom animated production. What did the numbers look like and did the quality premium from custom video design translate into a measurable funnel improvement that justified the production cost?
