Title:
Can I approach IIT Madras labs for a short (15-day) in-person + weekend hybrid robotics exposure?

Post:
Hey everyone,

I’m a 2nd year Mechatronics student (beginner → intermediate level) based in Chennai. I’m really curious about robotics and want to explore a lot of areas deeply—I’m genuinely interested and eager to learn as much as I can.

Right now I have a 15-day free window, and I want to use it in the best possible way.

I’ve been working on a personal project around human intention → robotic action systems (combining signals/AI with a gripper-style response system). Still learning, but actively building and improving.

Here’s my situation:

  • Available 15 days full-time (in-person)
  • After that, I can continue remotely / weekends (hybrid)
  • Not looking for a certificate—just real exposure, learning, and hands-on experience

I’m thinking of approaching labs at IIT Madras and asking if I can:

  • Observe ongoing work
  • Assist in small tasks
  • Learn from researchers / students

But I’m unsure:

  1. Is it realistic to approach IITM labs like this without prior contacts?
  2. Has anyone done something similar (even informally)?
  3. Should I email first or just try visiting and talking to people?
  4. What should I prepare so they take me seriously (GitHub, mini projects, etc.)?
  5. Any labs/groups at IITM that are more beginner-friendly?

I’m totally okay starting small—even just observing or helping with basic things—if it helps me learn and understand real robotics work.

Also open to suggestions outside IITM (labs, startups, workshops in Chennai).

Would really appreciate any guidance 🙏
