MATCH OF THE WEEK - Callies United (M) vs Edmonton BTB SC (M) on August 7, 2026

A Friday night at Setters Place in Red Deer, Alberta sets the stage for the APL regular-season finale between Callies United and Edmonton BTB SC.

It’s been a pleasure making time for APL football this season. Hopefully the league continues to grow toward a sustainable model where sponsorship and community partnerships can reduce the financial burden on the youth programs supporting many of these teams.

The regular season signed off with a one-sided contest, ending in a 7-0 win for Edmonton BTB SC.

0'-15'

  • BTB in a 3-2-5 in possession and 4-1-4-1 out of possession, which transitions into a 4-4-2 when Callies crosses the midfield line.
  • GOAL! 1-0 BTB.Very poor build-up from Callies playing from the back off the goal kick. They attempt a three-man combination, but a poor pass is intercepted on the edge of the box by BTB #3 David Doe. BTB immediately exploit the turnover in transition, and the cross finds #7 Tao Hein, who buries it.
  • Callies give the ball away far too easily, including several unforced turnovers when under little pressure. Lots of inaccurate and overhit passes going directly out for BTB throw-ins.
  • Callies in a 4-4-2 mid-block out-of-possession.
  • GOAL! 2-0 BTB. Excellent dribbling from BTB #11 David Moldovan-Falnicu on the right wing. He beats his man and creates a 2v1 overload in the right half-space, finding #13 Santino Rojas. Rojas delivers across goal to the box-crashing run of #3 David Doe, who arrives from deeper and slots it home.

15'-30'

  • Poor passing continues throughout Callies' build-up. They struggle to progress possession cleanly and consistently give the ball away.
  • Callies struggle mightily with tempo and decision-making in the final third. They slow attacks down when opportunities are there to accelerate and play forward, while rushing possession in moments where they would benefit from slowing down and recycling the ball.

30'–45'

  • GOAL! 3-0 BTB. BTB win the second ball from a long Callies goal kick. #13 Santino Rojas picks it up around midfield and is allowed to carry the ball unopposed all the way toward the box. Callies provide virtually no pressure on the ball or engagement of the ball carrier. Rojas takes advantage and produces an excellent finish into the bottom-left corner.
  • GOAL! 4-0 BTB. BTB build from the left before an excellent long ball from #3 David Doe releases #7 Tao Hein in behind the defensive line. The Callies defender has an opportunity to clear the bouncing ball but mistimes it, allowing Hein through 1v1. Hein calmly chips the goalkeeper for his second of the game.

I’m not going to watch the second half because why should I if Callies didn’t bother to show up? And I mean that almost literally because they arrived with 11 players and no substitutes.

From that first half, there was no discernible game plan. Just vibes and inshallah.

I understand the circumstances. This is a rescheduled fixture that was originally supposed to be played in Calgary and Callies are already guaranteed to finish last so the result is essentially meaningless and some players are due back with their U SPORTS programs next week. But none of that excuses the poor body language and general absence of competitive intensity we saw in that first half.

I am not naive to know that BTB are the better side. I watched and documented Callies against BTB in Edmonton earlier this season and Callies were decent for roughly 70 minutes and even held the lead. We have already seen that they are capable of competing with this team. The minimum standard has to be that teams arrive prepared and willing to compete, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the fixture if this is a competition we want to see grow.

I’d genuinely welcome someone from Callies providing some context for what happened tonight because from the outside looking in that first half was extremely disappointing.

MATCH OF THE WEEK - Calgary Blizzard (M) vs Calgary Villains (M) on July 24, 2026

Welcome back to another Alberta Premier League Match of the Week. We are at the Shane Homes West Soccer Dome this week as Calgary Blizzard take on Calgary Villains. Today’s match was moved indoors to ensure the safety of everyone involved due to the poor air quality caused by the ongoing wildfires. My thoughts are with all those who have been impacted by the wildfires and I hope everyone else is staying safe during this difficult time. The match delivered an exciting matchup which ended with a 4-0 win for the Calgary Blizzard.

0'–15'

  • Blizzard's structure is a 4-2-4, with left-back #18 William Omoreniye inverting into midfield. This has allowed them to bypass the first line of Villains' 4-4-2 mid-block press with ease.
  • Villains go long on every goal kick looking to win aerial duels and second balls in midfield. However, they play forward too quickly without committing enough players around the ball, meaning possession often returns straight back to Blizzard.
  • Villains are in a 4-2-4 in possession but are struggling to progress beyond their own half. Blizzard's aggressive man-to-man press has been suffocating them with Blizzard winning most ground duels and tackles. The Villains' body language in possession has reflected their frustration, with players seen shrugging.
  • GOAL! 1-0 Blizzard. Villains fail to fully clear the ball from their penalty area and Blizzard immediately regain possession. A quick three-man combination creates space for #14 James Greco-Taylor, who unleashes a stunning strike from around 30 yards into the top-left corner. TOP BINS SCREAMER GOLAZO!

15'–30'

  • Blizzard's #18 William Omoreniye continues to play a huge role in Blizzard's build-up and progression. A clear pattern has emerged with Blizzard building down the left side with Omoreniye who uses his technical quality to either carry the ball forward or play progressive passes.
  • GOAL! 2-0 Blizzard. As mentioned earlier, Villains continue to play long from goal kicks but lack enough players around the second ball. This time it proves costly. Blizzard win the aerial duel in midfield and immediately play forward. The player who won the initial duel continues his run into the centre of the penalty area, where Blizzard create a 3v2 overload. The resulting shot is saved, but #10 Marko Plenzik reacts quickest to finish the rebound.

30'-45'

  • GOAL! 3-0 Blizzard. Blizzard build-up from open play, and with no pressure on #18 William Omoreniye who delivers an excellent diagonal switch to the edge of the Villains' penalty area. The ball is laid off to #10 Marko Plenzik, who finishes into the bottom-left corner for his second goal of the match. Blizzard's finishing has been outstanding.
  • Blizzard's movement has been amazing. They constantly pass and move, create overloads, and operate between Villains' midfield and defensive lines, allowing them to retain possession and progress the ball consistently.
  • #20 Lucas Kohlman has been Villains' biggest attacking threat. He is the one player consistently willing to dribble at defenders and attempt to disrupt Blizzard's defensive shape.
  • Villains have managed to reach the final third on a few occasions after going down 3-0, but poor finishing and rushed final passes have prevented them from creating better chances.
  • Villains have also been careless when attempting skill moves inside their own half. Against Blizzard's quick transitional play, these turnovers have repeatedly left them exposed.

45'–60'

  • Villains struggle with setting the tempo in possession. In the first half, they rushed their attacks, but now they are taking too long to find the open player. In contrast, Blizzard make it seem like every player knows exactly where their teammates are which allows them to increase the tempo whenever an opportunity opens up.
  • Villains have become more aggressive with their press. Their second line is now supporting the first line leading to more ball recoveries in Blizzard's half.
  • Villains continue to lose possession in their own half, just as they did in the first half, with Blizzard's man-to-man press being a major reason why.
  • Villains are trying to bypass the press with long balls, but once they reach the edge of Blizzard's penalty area, they struggle to break down the defence, particularly on Blizzard's left-hand side -> Blizzard's #24 Spencer McCallum has been wonderful with his tackling and success in ground duels.

60'–75'

  • Blizzard's rotations and movement have been outstanding. Whenever one player vacates a space, another immediately rotates into it. These constant rotations are opening gaps in the Villains' defensive structure, and once space appears, Blizzard quickly raise the tempo and attack it with forward runs. The chemistry within this Blizzard side has been extremely impressive.
  • GOAL! Blizzard 4-0. #18 William Omoreniye caps off a Player of the Match performance with a goal. His inverted role into midfield has consistently caused Villains problems by allowing Blizzard to operate and receive between the lines. Blizzard flood the penalty area, and after #10 Marko Plenzik's initial effort is saved, Omoreniye's instinctive movement into the open space is rewarded as the rebound falls kindly to him, allowing him to finish into an empty net.
  • Blizzard have controlled midfield by consistently getting numbers around the ball. They have also shown excellent press resistance, with #6 Soliman Aria standing out in particular. It has been an excellent performance from the 2025 Canada West First Team All-Star.

75'-90'

  • One similarity between both teams is their inability to create meaningful chances from set pieces.
  • Villains continue to lack technical quality in the final third. Despite counterpressing much better in the second half and forcing turnovers from a few sloppy Blizzard passes, they have created virtually no clear-cut chances.
  • Even while leading 4–0, you could hear the Blizzard coach shouting, "SORT IT OUT!", demanding higher standards from his players after a string of careless passes in their own half.
  • Blizzard's conditioning has looked excellent compared to Villains in the closing stages. Villains' press has become increasingly passive, with gaps appearing all over the pitch. Blizzard have repeatedly been able to receive the ball on the half-turn and drive forward at speed, creating two excellent chances that ultimately went unfinished.

MATCH OF THE WEEK - BTB SC (M) vs Calgary Foothills (M) on July 17 2026

Friday nights don't get much better than a top-of-the-table clash in the Alberta Premier League. With first place on the line and two of the league's strongest sides going head-to-head, there was every reason to expect an entertaining evening of soccer. This week's Match of the Week takes us to Jasper Place Bowl in Edmonton, where BTB SC host Calgary Foothills. If there was ever a perfect way to spend a Friday night, this was it, and it ended in a 1-0 win for BTB SC.

0'–15'

  • Calgary Foothills defend in a 4-3-3 mid-block out of possession and build in a 2-3-5 when in possession.
  • Foothills have looked most dangerous attacking through the right half-space, working the ball to the edge of the box before delivering crosses into the area.
  • This pattern produced the game's first big chance when a cross fell to #11 Emmanuel Dan-Adokiene, who fired over the bar in a one-on-one opportunity with the BTB goalkeeper.
  • BTB have looked technically excellent in possession, particularly with their ball control, and hold-up play. However, Foothills' defence has recovered well, making several last-ditch tackles inside the penalty area to deny clear opportunities.
  • Out of possession, BTB have defended in a 4-4-2 mid-block. #7 Tao Hein steps onto Foothills centre-back #32 whenever he receives the ball, acting as BTB's pressing trigger. The pressure has forced blocked passes and long balls, allowing BTB to regain possession.

15'–30'

  • GOAL! 1-0 BTB. A poor first touch by Foothills' #8 Markus Kaiser in his own half creates a loose-ball ground duel. #10 Rilind Idrizi wins the 50/50 in Zone 14 before firing a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
  • BTB continue to bring #7 Tao Hein into midfield to link play and create a 3v2 overload. This has helped them control possession, while the space left behind is occasionally exploited by #11 Abe Khalil Kamara making runs into the right half-space.

30'–45'

  • BTB's passing quality has stood out, particularly the long-range distribution from #3 David Doe, whose passes have consistently found the feet of the forwards.
  • Calgary Foothills have continued to create danger through the right half-space, but BTB have defended the resulting crosses well, either blocking them or forcing them behind for corners.
  • Foothills have won three corners since falling behind, all aimed towards #29 Robert Woodroofe-Brown, but BTB have consistently surrounded him and dealt with the deliveries.
  • Foothills goalkeeper #13 Stephen Bowen has struggled with his distribution, with several kicks going directly out for BTB throw-ins.

45'–60'

  • Calgary Foothills continued with the same attacking pattern from the first half, creating danger through the right half-space before delivering crosses into the box for runners.
  • Foothills dominated the opening stages of the second half, using an aggressive counterpress in midfield to quickly regain possession and sustain attacks.
  • BTB goalkeeper David Sithole made three outstanding saves in the opening 15 minutes of the half to preserve the lead. Insane!
  • Foothills' sustained pressure and field tilt forced BTB into a more direct approach, relying on long balls for counterattacks to relieve pressure -> The individual battle between BTB's #7 Tao Hein's agility and Foothills' #33 Fraser Aird's physicality was one of the standout matchups so far in the second half.
  • BTB defended their penalty area exceptionally well, staying compact and ensuring every Foothills attacker was immediately challenged upon entering the box. Their alert defending has been a major reason why the league's highest-scoring side has been kept off the scoresheet.

60'–75'

  • Foothills attacked in an aggressive 2-2-6 structure, pinning BTB back into their own box.
  • Foothills' #7 Logan Rieck impressed me with his passing, particularly his line-breaking passes and dangerous corner deliveries, which continued to create chances.
  • David Sithole produced another outstanding point-blank save to keep BTB in front.
  • Foothills frequently recycled possession through Fraser Aird, whose long diagonal passes over BTB's press helped restart attacks and maintain territorial dominance.

75'–90'

  • BTB committed fully to a direct approach, going long from nearly every goal kick and doing well to win the resulting second balls which is helping relieve pressure around their penalty area.
  • Foothills continued to dominate possession but struggled to break down BTB's compact defensive block. Their attacks are increasingly relying on long balls and crosses now, but BTB consistently won tackles and pressured the ball around their own box.
  • BTB #8 Mario Lefevre once again stood out with his ability to intercept dangerous passes and win defensive duels. He was sent off in the 87th minute following a late challenge that, in my view, was more deserving of a yellow card.
  • The closing stages were played almost entirely in BTB's defensive third, especially after the red card, but Foothills couldn't capitalize. Two late chances created from crosses delivered through the right half-space went unfinished, summing up a frustrating evening for the league's highest-scoring attack.

MATCH OF THE WEEK - St. Albert Impact (M) vs Calgary Rangers (M) on July 10 2026

Life and work have kept me away for a few weeks, but it feels good to be back watching the Alberta Premier League. The World Cup may be on the biggest stage, but the future of Canadian soccer is still being written in local leagues like this one. This week's Match of the Week takes us to Riel Recreation Park in St. Albert, Alberta where the St. Albert Impact beat the Calgary Rangers 2-0.

0'-15'

  • St. Albert Impact are going long and winning the second balls -> leading to more sustained possession.
  • St. Albert have had various set-piece opportunities (2 corners and 2 free kicks) but execution is not leading to clear-cut chances.
  • GOAL! Error leading to a goal by the Calgary Rangers. An attempted pass back to the back line is played into open space, allowing St. Albert's #11 Noah Lechelt to go 1 vs 1 with the Rangers goalkeeper and Lechelt buries it. 1-0 to the Imapct.

15'-30'

  • Rangers in a 4-4-2 press and trying to play in transition but they are struggling to progress once the ball reaches the front line.
  • GOAL! 2-0 Imapct. It starts off by #7 Jacob Kwizera receiving in tight space in midfield. His press resistance allows him to find the free player before a quick pass releases #11 Noah Lechelt, who finishes into the bottom-right corner.
  • Impact keep pushing up from the right wing repeatedly. #7 Jacob Kwizera has been so dangerous on the right wing.
  • Rangers players have been struggling trying to build up when the Impact press. The pressure is forcing several rushed clearances out of play.

30'-45'

  • Two big chances missed by the Calgary Rangers from that right-half space. The chances come from sloppy passes by the Impact's backline leading to a turnover in their own half and transition chances for the Rangers.
  • Rangers are trying through balls in that right half space but have been caught offside 5 times this half.

45'-60'

  • Impact build up in a 3-2-5 shape, with the holding midfielder dropping into the back line to allow the left-back to push higher. The structure gives them numerical superiority in the opposition half and helps them sustain possession through effective counter-pressing -> I heard the Rangers' LB yell "I AM IN A 3v1 EVERYTIME, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO."
  • Impact have been creating chances from the left wing with #10 Chosen Jones' dribbling causing problems for the Rangers' right side defenders -> #10 Chosen Jones' excellent dribbling leading to a cutback to #7 Jacob Kwizera who misses a big chance.
  • Many of Rangers' players have a heavy first touch and it is causing the ball to get away from them and the Impact are pouncing on it and going in transition or gaining more of the possession.

The game has been abandoned at the 66th minute due to a thunderstorm.

MATCH OF THE WEEK - BTB SC (M) vs Calgary Villains (M) on June 19, 2026

Most football fans spend their evenings watching the World Cup. I find myself coming back to local Alberta football. Whether it's the players or simply the quality on display each week, the Alberta Premier League keeps pulling me back in. This week, that means BTB SC versus Calgary Villains at Jasper Place Bowl in Edmonton which ends in a 2-0 win for BTB SC.

0'-15'

  • Possession is dominated by BTB. They are trying to carve the opposition but the Villains' defensive positioning is leaving very little space for BTB to exploit.
  • Villains' gameplan is to play on the counter-attack -> just forced BTB's #1 David Sithole into an excellent point blank save.
  • Villains' defensive shape is very compact and the pressing trigger is when the ball reaches the BTB's double pivot. The Villains press in man-to-man as soon as that ball gets to the BTB's second line.
  • BTB trying to go through Villains centrally but its closed down by the Villains winning all the ground duels in zone 14.

15'-30'

  • Villains continue to play counter attacking football but struggle to go from defence to offence -> it looks very rushed and the long balls are more like clearances rather than aimed towards a target man.
  • BTB are showing more technical quality in this game than their opposition especially in passing, dribbling and hold-up play but no big chances created so far.
  • Villains are very well-coached defensively. Everyone is positioned correctly to win duels or second balls or to press. Impressed by Villains' left-back #23 Oluwafikunayomi Kareem. He has won every ground duel so far.
  • Long balls continue to be the offensive gameplan for the Villains. They go long every single time from set-pieces and goalkicks.
  • Much better from BTB when they dribble at the opposition (#3 David Doe with the superb ball carrying) because it collapses the Villains' shape and just led to a big chance which was saved by the Villains' GK #1 Hilary Mulah.
  • Overall, Villains' 5-4-1 mid-block is holding up well with 30 minutes in.
  • The one time the Villains go short on the goalkick, they lose the ball in their own half and commit a tactical foul on the edge of their own box.

30'-45'

  • I would say BTB has 75% possession but really struggling to create shooting chances. They are bringing their attacking midfielder #10 Rilind Idrizi and striker #7 Tao Hein deeper for more link-up play and overloads in midfield.
  • BTB are trying to create chances from the wings now (RB #2 Kyrie Welch is pushing up more on the left wing) but all crosses are dealt with by the Villain's back 5. The Villains have won all the aerial duels in their box.
  • BTB have good transition defence. It helps that positionally that they stay compact vertically and they play a high defensive line so when they lose the ball they can press and win it back quickly and continue with their pressure and field tilt advantage.
  • GOAL! All that pressure pays off for BTB. A goal from the center of the box just before half-time after getting on the second ball from winning the aerial duel (first aerial duel won by BTB in the Villains box; it was won by #7 Tao Hein) and the knockdown falls to #10 Rilind Idrizi who smashes it into the low left goal zone.

45'-60'

  • The BTB press is causing a lot of the Villains' players to have a very heavy first touch which leads to a turnover and BTB regaining possession.
  • BTB continuing to cause Villains trouble with their dribbling and ball carrying -> leads to a dangerous free kick for BTB on the edge of the box.
  • BTB winning second balls on goalkicks and regain possession immediately. This is something Villains' coaching staff need to address.
  • Villains are trying to create attacks from the left side but BTB are overloading that side and winning the ball back before the Villains get to the BTB box.

60'-75'

  • BTB love to get #3 David Doe to play direct balls over the defence to a target man
  • No major tactical changes by Villains as they continue to sit in a 5-4-1 low block but the spaces between the lines are getting larger and BTB are exploiting pockets in the half-spaces and wings.
  • Fatigue + the suffocating BTB press is really affecting the Villains. They are really struggling to get out of their own half. Inaccurate passing especially under pressure is a concern.
  • The story of this half is that as soon as Villains get to midfield, they get pressed by BTB and lose the ground duel. BTB love to overload and swarm the ball. They leave two players at the base with a holding midfielder and they have been excellent with their duel winning, awareness, recoveries and tackling (special shoutout to BTB #8 Mario Lefevre).

75'-90'

  • GOAL BTB! Ever since the midway mark of the first half, BTB started to target the wings more and this time they were able to get a corner from the left after some excellent ball carrying from BTB #15 Chris Ouanda. BTB #16 E. Castello is left unmarked in the middle of the box from the corner and heads it into the net. Very deserving.
  • The Villains did not have a shot for the entirety of the second half. In summary, BTB's technical quality, ball carrying, and relentless counterpressing gradually broke down a well-organized Villains 5-4-1 block, leading to a deserved 2-0 victory.

MATCH OF THE WEEK - Calgary Rangers (M) vs St. Albert Impact (M) on June 12 2026

Most eyes were understandably fixed on the biggest stage in the sport as Canada opened its home World Cup campaign against Bosnia. But, a few thousand kilometers away at Webber Academy Athletic Park, Calgary Rangers and St. Albert Impact were providing a reminder of where those journeys often begin: local pitches, local leagues, choppy livestream especially when the wind blows and players chasing the same dream of one day representing their country. World Cup dreams aside, this game had my full attention and it ended 1-0 for the St. Albert Impact.

0'–15'

  • Calgary Rangers have gone long on goal kicks so far and are fighting hard for aerial duels.
  • Rangers are dropping midfielders into the build-up to overload the first line of Impact's press. Amazing passing sequence from Rangers carries the ball into the final third and leads to a corner. Amazing football.
  • Impact love to play through the wings, especially down the right side.
  • Rangers are trying to build up from goal kicks now but keep turning it over in their own half -> 3 shots for Impact so far.
  • The Rangers goalkeeper #1 B. Benton is keeping them in the game right now. He's looked excellent.

15'–30'

  • Impact have most of the possession and field tilt, just lacking quality in the Rangers' box.
  • Long ball from Impact leads to a last-man foul and a straight red card for Rangers. Rangers now have to play with 10 men and we're only 20 minutes in.
  • Rangers turning the ball over in their own half has been a huge problem. Mostly sloppy passes rather than anything forced by Impact.
  • Impact's game plan is clear: get the ball into #10 Choosen Jones in the right half-space to thread it to the attackers.

30'–45'

  • What a goal! One minute after writing my last point, the Impact find the breakthrough. #10 Choosen Jones receives in the right half-space, dribbles past his man and cuts the ball back to #20 Nate Lechelt. 1–0 to the St. Albert Impact.
  • That goal perfectly reflected Impact's game plan throughout the first half. #10 Choosen Jones has been their engine, constantly operating in that right half-space.
  • Rangers continue to attack and have looked threatening with crosses despite being down to 10 men. I've been impressed by their resilience despite conceding and playing a man down.

45'–60'

  • I like the Rangers' press and passing through the Impact press. They have had a free kick, corner, and through-ball opportunity because of it all in 5 minutes.
  • Impact continue to target the right half-space. It shifts the Rangers' defence and opens space for Impact in the central area ->Shot on target by #11 Noah Lechelt from zone 14 leading to a huge save by Rangers' goalkeeper #1 B. Benton
  • Impressed with the Impact's ability to defend their box, especially #2 Onnesphore Amanda and #6 Peter Jones.

60'–75'

  • The Rangers' press is really affecting Impact's ability to build up. Rangers are just lacking that connection in the final third.
  • #3 Hyunsoo Ryu's technical ability and passing for Rangers is amazing. Rangers have a gem.
  • Rangers still have the same problem as the first half: sloppy passes in their own half leading to turnovers and dangerous free kicks for Impact.
  • Rangers are winning the midfield battle but no creativity and are creating very little in the final third.
  • Rangers continue to win midfield and ground duels and it has gotten to the Impact's head. Impact's #14 Nicholas Lechelt receives a red card after a harsh challenge near the center circle. -> Both teams are now down to 10 men.
  • Both coaches are having words with each other on the touchline after the sending off. A lot of "F-bombs".

75'–90'

  • Impact continue their stellar defending in their box.
  • Impact are sitting in a mid-block with all 10 players behind the ball.
  • I know the Rangers have not won a game this season but they just need a player who can operate between the lines in a technical way to create more chances. Their pressing, duel winning in the midfield and physicality have been excellent, especially in the second half.
  • Huge save by the Impact goalkeeper #1 Andrey Horhul on a back-post header after a Rangers cross from the right side!! Best chance for an equalizer! Rangers have been playing mostly down that left wing and left half-space this half but they switch it and leads to a big chance.
  • Impact have been passive for most of the second half but look comfortable trusting their five-player back line and goalkeeper to deal with pressure. An absolute masterclass on how to defend their box. They won nearly all the aerial and ground duels in their box. Monstrous.

MATCH OF THE WEEK - BTB SC (M) vs Callies United (M) on June 5, 2026

Sure, Canada vs Ireland had most people's attention tonight as World Cup fever starts to build but I am over here locked into BTB SC vs Callies United at Jasper Place Bowl like the absolute sicko that I am. As the Edmonton weather spent PMSing all evening and the teams battled it out, the game ended with a 2-1 win for the BTB SC, and honestly, I wouldn't have wanted to be watching anything else.

0'–15'

  • Great clearance by Callies to clear the early danger from a BTB cross. Very compact defensively.
  • Both teams struggled to build up an attack, but BTB had more possession in the first 10 minutes.
  • Loving the BTB press. It's causing Callies a lot of problems when they get on the ball.
  • What a save by the Callies goalkeeper (Adam Hearn)!! BTB go on transition and almost score, but a HUGE stop from Hearn keeps it level and rocking that pink kit.
  • Callies' 5-2-3 out-of-possession shape is working so far. Shoutout to the backline, who are dealing well with BTB's long balls and winning most final duels.
  • BTB are winning the midfield battle so far and have spent most of the game in the attacking half, but they need better chance creation and to be more clinical in the opposition box.

15'–30'

  • Callies are growing into the game now. Winning more midfield duels, which leads to a great shot from outside the box that goes just wide.
  • I love BTB's movement and ball carrying. The ball feels like it's glued to their feet, especially #2 (Kyrie Welch).
  • That BTB press is suffocating. They keep winning the ball back in the Callies half.
  • #6 (Josiah Kandinda) for BTB is a midfield general. Love how he is constantly scanning before receiving the ball.
  • Around the 30-minute mark, both teams are struggling to create meaningful chances from set pieces.

30'–45'

  • #2 (A. Nuell) for Callies has excellent tackling and is very calm.
  • Both teams are looking to build up from the back, which is a testament to both teams' technical ability.
  • Callies are turning the ball over too much in their own half. Luckily for them, BTB have not capitalized.
  • #8 (Mario Lefevre) for BTB is so calm in possession and keeps winning his duels, which leads to several counterattacking opportunities.
  • BTB are still lacking quality in the final third. Very little chance creation despite getting into promising positions.
  • Huge chance missed by BTB's #7 (Tao Hein) after a superb run by #8 (Mario Lefevre) to collapse the Callies defensive shape and good cross from #2 (Kyrie Welch). BTB should be up by now.
  • Callies' defensive shape has been good, but BTB probably should be leading by halftime given the chances and territory they've had.

45'–60'

  • BTB are really good at winning second balls making field tilt an advantage for them.
  • Callies are putting on a masterclass in how to defend corners.
  • Really impressed with BTB's #6 (Josiah Kandinda). His technical ability is very good.
  • Oh my days! A poor penalty conceded by BTB's #3 (David Doe) after a quick build-up by Callies catches the BTB back line all over the place -> #3 (David Doe) for BTB gets pulled out of position and overcommits, catching the Callies winger inside the box.
  • #7 (Anson Minty) for Callies steps up and slots the penalty into the net, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

60'–75'

  • BTB look frustrated after conceding but are still finding dangerous spaces, especially out wide.
  • Huge spaces are appearing between the lines, but BTB continue to look threatening from the wings.
  • Callies remain very compact defensively and are not giving BTB an inch whenever they enter the penalty area.
  • What a goal by BTB. They win the ball in midfield and break in transition with quick passing before #7 (Tao Hein) scores superbly. Absolutely deserved based on the pressure they have been creating.

75'–90'

  • BTB are looking very dangerous down the right-hand side. Dangerous crosses continue to be delivered into the box, but the Callies goalkeeper is dealing with them well.
  • Callies are going more direct and long from goal kicks, but BTB are winning the majority of the aerial and ground duels.
  • Ever since the equalizer, BTB have continued to increase the pressure and flood the Callies box -> BTB hit the post. All hands on deck for Callies.
  • All that pressure finally pays off. BTB win a penalty after attacking again down the right side, where they have looked dangerous all half. BTB #20 steps up and buries the penalty. What a turnaround after going down 1–0.
  • BTB are excellent in ground duels. They are physical, technical, and consistently win their battles.
  • Callies really struggled to establish possession in the second half. There was little connection between the back line and the rest of the team. I was not impressed by how they managed the game after going 1-0 up but I am sure they will use this as data to improve for the next game.
