How do you actually tell if a diamond is real? (No paperwork, no shame)

How do you actually tell if a diamond is real? (No paperwork, no shame)

So I inherited a ring from my aunt and I absolutely love it. but I have zero documentation. No cert, no receipt, nothing. Just vibes and a really pretty stone.

I've been doing that thing where you hold it up to different lights like I somehow know what I'm looking for. I also tried the fog test (you breathe on it and see how fast it clears) but it was kind of a cold day and I genuinely don't trust my results.

Has anyone figured out a solid way to test at home before committing to taking it to a jeweler? I don't know why I feel weird about that but I do, like I don't want to walk in and have them tell me it's glass while I'm standing there in my feelings about my late aunt's jewelry.

I've seen people mention the newspaper test, the float test, looking for an inscription... but I can't tell which ones actually work vs. which ones are just internet myths at this point.

For context I'm not trying to insure it or anything, I just want to know. Anyone been through this?
