On April 25th my son was involved in a car accident. He was the sole passenger. It is still unsure whether the driver hit the semi truck or the semi hit them, but for now the story from EMS is that the car hydroplaned and then crashed into a guardrail. My son took the brunt of the damage on his side. My son is currently in the trauma ICU with several skull fractures and brain bleeds.

The driver (his friend) has USAA. His parents say that they have filed a claim with USAA and that my son will be taken care of. The thing is… I don’t know what I am supposed to be doing. I’ve been on the opposite end of this as a driver with USAA insurance, but never the other way around.

We are still waiting on the police report for more details, and to see if the semi also needs to be help liable. My husband and I are currently looking for a lawyer, but in the meantime what should we be expecting from USAA? I have never had to deal with anything like this before and it is all very overwhelming.

On April 25th my son was the passenger in a car accident involving a semi truck. They were hit into a guardrail. My 21-year-old son took most of the damage. He had several skull fractures and multiple brain bleeds. Monday he developed cerebral edema. He has been in the ICU ever since Saturday.

I work full time, as does my husband/his Dad. My son also worked full time, and he was just cleared to join the Air Force. Unfortunately we don’t think that is much of a reality anymore. I have had to take a leave of absence from my job to stay by his side. Two days ago his care team mentioned inpatient rehab. Today they informed me that all of the rehab centers they gave me a list for do not take our insurance. The parents of the other young man involved are still trying to get their insurance situated, but in the meantime I am asking for help with expenses accruing while I am out of work. They are expecting him to be in ICU for another week. The hospital is an hour away from home.

So far he has been making great strides. Up until yesterday he was not speaking, then he started saying a few words here and there. He was finally removed from the EEG machine last night, but is still on sodium to stop the swelling in his brain.

The road to recovery is long, but we are staying optimistic.
