Bought a standing desk thinking I should stand all day — turns out the real goal is switching positions frequently

When I first brought my standing desk, around Christmas las year, I assumed the whole point was to stand as much as possible. I'd force myself to stand up for long period, but it wasn't comfortable and it didn't fit all tasks. This lead to that I didn't use it at all instead. So I did a bit of googling and the research is quite clear that it's not healthy to stand for long durations either. The important thing is to change position frequently and to add a few movements breaks.

This is the routine that works for me now:

  • Sit for about 30 minutes.
  • Stand for about 20 minutes.
  • Move around for about 5 minutes.

I'm a developer so I built deskrhythm.com to help me stick to this cadence. It's completely free and runs in your browser if you like to use it as well.
