Is Hinduism always about worshipping gods?

I understand the concept of moksha, self liberation, the cycles of life and death. But the temples these days are being crowded, especially holy sites it could be due to more accessible and affordable transport.

But is the scenario always like this? If I go to a major holy temple, It feels like seeing a celebrity due to the crowd rather than connecting with the deity and finding peace. I understand people have hardships and needs but is that the sole reason?

For example Buddhist shrines are much more peaceful and focus on prayer. Is there something more which I'm missing? Any wise priests and practitioners please enlighten me.
