For those thinking about selling
I made some small life changing money in 2017-18 (you can probably guess how). I have some thoughts on market cycles and selling.
If you’re thinking about selling, then it’s time to sell. That itch is going to get more extreme and turn into panic when the bubble pops and you spend years watching prices go down and sideways. Note: this always happens. You are not special. Pokémon is not special. This is how markets work. I didn’t make the rules.
That being said —
Never sell everything. Sell half. Sell a third. Sell less than that if you can cover your principle and like Pokémon. Make a little profit on top … and then chill.
The thing is when you sell and you cover principle the rest feels like “free money” and you don’t stress about selling anymore. Seeing your portfolio go up everyday is fun. Watching it go down everyday is stressful. You can avoid that stress and still participate in the hobby by not selling it all. Win-win.
And if you can’t sell less than half to cover principle: just enjoy the ride.
