Thinking of a career shift. Would love advice.

I’m thinking of transitioning away from management roles in nonprofit setting and getting into Peds hospital social work. It should financially be comparable if not a bit better pay/way better benefits. Am I making a mistake? Would you make this transition? Is the grass greener in hospital work?

I want more balance. More stability with the fed funding cuts to nonprofits. And to mix things up a bit.

To move or not to move

Hey, all, we live in Chicago and bought our house in 2020 with a very low interest rate for 140 K back when we were making about 60 K a year. We are now making 220 K per year and got approved for a 700 K mortgage including equity. We have in our current house at 125K.

Current neighborhood is fine. But we are finding ourselves constantly in the neighborhood we want to move in and are wanting to move. Single families start around 650 K. Townhouses plus HOA are around the same starting space. the neighborhood is super desirable, walkable to the lake, walkable to everything. Good schools and still in the city. gorgeous 1880s historical and architecturally rich homes. At this point, 700 K is the top of our budget. All homes are fixer uppers for the most part in that 600 range but it’s a worst house in the best block situation. Turn key homes start in the 800s

We are feeling pretty stuck. Do we stay in our home or do we move. There’s nothing causing us to move except for lifestyle improvement. If we move, we really won’t have money for improvements for a few years. What would you do?

125k down. Total price we are looking at paying would be 600-650 ideally.

Paying off cards debt with remaining profit from home sale - 18k

Retirement 200k

Dual income - no kids. But will want kids in the next few years.

Sw director or career pivot - feeling stuck

So here is the situation I’d love advice on. I was recently given notice I’ll be laid off from my current position at the end of September. Since that notice, I’ve been actively job hunting. I’m a social worker/non profit leader with management and director level experience. Here’s the thing - all nonprofits right now are experiencing massive funding cuts. To stay in nonprofit - everyone will be stretched thin. To get laid off again would suck. SO when figuring out what I wanted to prioritize for my next move, I am leaning into what feels sustainable. Good pay and low burnout. Honestly, nonprofit has had a tendency to have high burnout for me. Being in management has helped me balance some things, but in other ways, people managing has been stressful.

Here’s the question. I’ve been interviewing at a ton of places and I’m down to two. I have an offer for a Director role at a small but National nonprofit, fine- average benefits, 85k salary - not much of a career ladder at the org past the role. I’d be out of direct service work completely, just supervising and doing fundraising/grant writing. I have a received an offer and need to let them know by next Friday.

The other role would be starting over as a medical social worker as a IC at a top children’s hospital. Excellent benefits. Room for growth. Starting salary around the same as directors salary. My second interview is next Thursday, no offer yet.

Both are roles I’m open to but the 1st looks similar to the work I’ve been doing over the last 10 years.

Here’s where I’m having a pause. Is it worth the risk to leave the ladder I’ve climbed? I also don’t have experience in hospital based work but do in the field of social work as a whole. The timeline also sucks because I will need to turn down a concrete offer to go after a potential job. I also don’t even know if I’ll like it. I’m really stuck - any advice would help!
