I’m planning to start a “research use only” peptide company in the U.S., and I want to approach this in a compliant and sustainable way (not trying to cut corners).

For those with real experience in this niche:

  1. From a compliance standpoint, what actually differentiates a legitimate research peptide company from one that gets shut down?
  2. How far does labeling (“for research use only”) really go in practice with FDA scrutiny?
  3. What operational mistakes typically expose companies legally (marketing language, payment processing, customer interactions, etc.)?
  4. What’s a realistic startup budget if I want to prioritize quality (3rd-party testing, proper sourcing, etc.) instead of just flipping inventory?
  5. How do you properly vet suppliers (especially overseas) to avoid fake or low-purity peptides?
  6. What kind of testing protocol is considered credible in this space (COAs vs independent lab verification)?
  7. What payment processors or setups actually survive long-term in this industry?
  8. How do you build trust in a market where customers are naturally skeptical?
  9. What are the biggest misconceptions people have before entering this business
I’m not interested in shortcuts — I want to understand the risks, structure, and long-term viability before committing.

Appreciate any insight.
