First Time Flying SW

Hi! I am a new flyer with Southwest and I have only ever flown Alaska prior to this.

I am looking at flights from PDX-Long Beach, CA and am a bit worried about lay overs/what I should know about basic fare. The flights to my destination are PDX-OAK with a 2.5 hour layover before boarding at OAK-LGB, and then my returning flight is LGB-SJC with 1 hour and 25 minutes for a layover and then SJC-PDX.

Is this enough time for layovers? I am also looking at the basic fare and want to know if I should pay to upgrade seats or if basic is okay for me. I will be solo traveling with only a carry on so I'm not super worried about seats but would appreciate any input.

Also in the event a flight were to get delayed and I missed by connecting flight, how does SW handle that? Is it up to me to book new flights? I have read that they should rebook them for me but I am curious to hear about others experiences, tell me everything I need to know!
