half my small biz clients have IG followers who've never been in their shop. the problem.

I consult for small businesses across bristol and bath. wrote previously about pivoting from running a cleaning business to advising on operations.

IG has come up in 11 of my last 14 client conversations. the pattern is consistent and embarrassing for the businesses involved.

the cafe owner with 4,100 followers, 90 percent of whom live more than 2 hours away. the florist with 8,300 followers, 70 percent of whom found her through a viral reel about preserving roses but never order. the gift shop owner with 11k followers, none of whom buy from her physical shop because her ecom site is broken.

all three told me the same thing in different words. "my IG is growing but my revenue is not."

the diagnosis is the same. they grew followers without any audience design. anyone who liked the content followed. anyone who followed did not buy because they were not local or not their customer.

the fix is the same. stop optimising for follower count. start optimising for local saves and DMs from accounts within their delivery radius. measure success in postcode coverage, not follower count.

the cafe is now tracking saves from bristol-area accounts specifically. her bristol saves are up 41 percent in 60 days. her foot traffic on weekends is up too.

your IG audience is only useful if they live in your service area.
