When people talk of western dominance they usually infer to Europe but it was the British who kick-started the industrial revolution, science, innovation and Inventing. France followed suit aswell as Germany. The question is why was Northern Italy incapable or failed to follow suit especially as the Renaissance happened there. Yes I know there many great Italians like Marconi (radio) Alessandro Volta (electrical bolts) Fermi (Nuclear power station) so I'm not ignorant to the many great Italians although I don't count Da Vinci as he never invented anything. Spain/Portugal never had the influence like the UK and likewise never delved into science like the Brits.
