It’s a miracle!!
So I accidentally ended up with one of the weirdest “why is this actually working?” AM4 memory configs I’ve ever personally used.
System:
\- Ryzen 9 3900X
\- Gigabyte X570 AORUS Pro WiFi
\- RTX 2080 Ti
Original RAM setup was a perfectly matched 2x8GB G.Skill Ripjaws V 3600 CL16 kit (Hynix CJR). One of my old 2x16 Trident Z Neo sticks died awhile back, so I had a single leftover 16GB dual-rank Trident Z Neo 3600 CL16 stick also using Hynix CJR.
Out of pure curiosity I tried running:
\- 2x8GB Ripjaws V
\- 1x16GB Trident Z Neo
for a total of 32GB in an asymmetric 3-DIMM configuration.
I expected:
\- terrible training
\- forced CR2/GDM
\- unstable FCLK
\- or getting kicked down to 3200
Instead the board trained:
\- DDR4-3600
\- 1800 FCLK/UCLK synced
\- 16-19-19-39
\- somehow still CR1
AIDA64:
\- Read: 46 GB/s
\- Latency: 72.7ns
What surprised me most is that Apex Legends, which absolutely LOVES exposing memory instability, completed a full match with zero crash/reboot issues after tuning things a bit. Also I know this isn’t “true triple channel” since AM4 is dual-channel only, but it’s fascinating seeing Ryzen handle an asymmetric SR/DR mixed-capacity setup this well.
Honestly feels like one of those:
“this should not be working this nicely” moments 😂
