Curious about ND1 owners who have had transmission failures experiences. Are symptoms of a failing transmission noticeable ahead of time or more sudden?

And what exactly happens when they do fail? Am I able to limp it home just without 3rd gear like when the synchros fail on later cars? Or is it a tow truck situation where you’re left stranded?
