My friend and I are planning a week long surf trip in late May/early June and trying to find the right destination for our skill level. We’re both advanced beginners, can catch unbroken waves, ride down the line, do some basic up and down the face but not snaps or carves yet. I’m in a high volume 6’0 fish and can’t reliably duck dive yet.

We originally planned El Salvador but after posting here got some feedback that May/June is peak season and 4-6 foot is basically the floor there, which is beyond what we’re comfortable in. We want warm water and looking for somewhere with consistent 3-4 foot max surf. Seems like Costa Rica and Nicaragua are similar situations as El Salvador at that time of year.

Any recommendations?

Hey everyone. So I was considering going to El Salvador in late May for a graduation trip to surf for a week with a buddy of mine but I’m a bit concerned about the wave size during that time of year.

I went to El Salvador in January last year and we mainly surfed El Sunzal on long boards, it was pretty mushy sized 2-3 feet and I had no issue but apparently it averages like 8-10 feet in El Salvador in May/June when we are planning to go.

Ive mainly surfed during the summer in Western France and then would take a break for the majority of the year as I live in Jersey and didnt have the ability to drive myself to the coast to surf but over the last couple of years I’ve added in a few sessions throughout the year in Jersey as well.

Up until this past week I took a 6 month break and then went out in Long Island in 3-4 feet swell and I got kinda hammered. I can catch a few waves and do a basic up and down turns on the face a couple times but that’s it.

I ride a 6’0 FireWire seaside which I’m pretty comfortable on but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to duck dive. Can’t believe it’s taken me so long.

Anyways this last week in Jersey when a few big sets rolled in I got rocked and was genuinely pretty scared in the water at times. I know that it’s a way faster, punchier wave where I surf on the east coast but I can’t help but feel like I would get obliterated in waves 8-10 feet in El Salvador even if they may be mushier.

What do you guys think? Any recommendations of other spots in central/South America that may be smaller during that time of year?
