[PC][1995-2000] First-person game I barely remember with a checkerboard floor
Platform(s): PC (playable on Windows 98 at least?)
Genre: First-person point-and-click? Could've been a first person action game too, hard to know/remember.
Estimated year of release: Mid 90's most likely
Graphics/art style: Realistic (as far as that era goes), potentially pre-rendered like Myst.
I unfortunately don't remember much about the game as a whole visually, except this: a large, likely square, open room with multiple white pillars. The floor is checkered black and white. I don't remember if there were visible walls or if it was a black void (or if there was only darkness until you got close to a wall).
More uncertainly, I remember three entrances to the room: one that's the entrance (potentially locked behind you? not sure), an exit to a balcony(?), and a door to the right(?) that leads to a deeper area of whatever place you're in.
Notable characters: I don't remember a single visible character or line of dialogue.
Notable gameplay mechanics: None that I can clearly remember. I don't even really remember how movement works, but a more step-by-step style like a point-and-click feels more right. If there was combat, it was when you went deeper in the (potential) door to the right, and I don't remember how it was. Likely pretty simple.
Other details: To be upfront, I'm unsure if this is actually a game I remember from my childhood, or a dream I had as a kid that I still remember despite me never really remembering my dreams. Since I was so young, it's also likely that my memories of it have been distorted with time.
If real, this was played on Windows 98, and was almost certainly either a free/browser(?) game or a game that was included as a demo with the OS (I remember there being quite a few demos, including Quake II). I was too young to really understand how games worked so I never got further than what I've described. If it's a demo, it's possible it wasn't the start of the game.
I've tried looking into games that were included as demos on Windows 98 and couldn't find anything resembling it. Could've missed something, though.
