I have a question for anyone who doesn't live in the US.

Sooo... they don't teach us metric in american schools, and I have an honest question about it. I know that a meter is the home of the metric system, and most other measurements are connected to the meter. But my question is, if a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter, and a millimeter is 1/1,000,000 of a meter, then why is a kilomter 1,000 meters?
