Any ideas what this wood beetle is?
South of England based, I have an area of wooden tree stumps/ferns/hostas and noticed a small patch of little beetles the other day. Over the last few days however this has multiplied 10x and they're now everywhere.
Any idea what they are? They look similar, but not identical to, various wood boring beetles I have seen online. I also can't see any evidence of actual wood damage/holes so far. My main question is whether they are a happy part of the ecosystem you want when creating dead wood garden areas, or if they're invasive and need curtailing?
Thanks in advance!
Edit - They're about 5mm in length!
