I called my partner verbally abusive

Hi everyone. Recently had an issue with my SO who has bipolar and would appreciate any advice.

My partner can become very harsh with his words during manic episodes. Granted, he’s medicated and does his absolute best to manage it healthily. He’s truly the kindest, and most caring person I’ve ever met.

But again, during manic episodes, the words can become very harsh. During a conversation, I told him that I feel like I’m getting verbally abused during his episodes. Because of his incredibly strong guilty conscience, he took strong offense from this specific term.

I can stand by what I said as I believe his actions during episodes are separate from the character he really is. However, it seems like this logic itself isn’t being heard by him and issues are created whenever this topic is brought up. So I just told him that I misspoke and didn’t mean it.

Should I have been more careful with my wording considering how much effort he puts into being an amazing partner for me? Was it unnecessarily cruel of me to use this phrasing?
