Government Contracting: Easy Money or Real Business?
Everyone talks about government contracting like it’s a shortcut to making six figures.
The reality? It can be extremely profitable, but it’s definitely not easy money.
The upside is huge: the government is a massive customer, contracts can run for years, and winning a contract can give your business serious credibility. There are also programs designed to create opportunities for small, minority-owned, and veteran-owned businesses.
But there’s a catch.
The learning curve is steep. There’s a ton of paperwork, strict compliance requirements, long bidding processes, and plenty of competition. Cash flow can also become a problem when you're waiting on payments.
I think the biggest misconception is that you can just register your business, find a contract, and suddenly start collecting six-figure checks.
People actually doing this seem to have a very different experience: skill + patience + persistence + compliance.
For those of you who have actually won government contracts:
Was it worth the effort? And what do you wish you knew before getting started?
