I’m genuinely curious, and maybe I’m missing posts with queries that include the consideration of these roles: why do filmmakers of all experience and budget levels (but usually indie, low budget) often fail to mention these departments when planning their projects?
Considering the effort that goes into casting, camera, lighting etc—isn’t the visual execution and care of your characters equally as important as the other aspects?
Is it sexism, because these departments are often predominantly female?
Is it because everyone wears clothes so “it’s not that hard”?
Maybe I’ll get eviscerated here, but I’d really like to know. It’s disheartening to consistently see posts about “what can I do to make my project look better” or “how can I prep for my shoot” and fail to mention costumes, hair, makeup. And even more disheartening to realize that the lack of consideration spills over into commercial and other higher-budget work.
