Getting along as a party
Pf2e was introduced to me about three years ago, and in that time I have been a DM and a player in more than a few APs. As a system I love it, it is perhaps one of my favorites and the biggest draw in for me is that there are few limitations when creating your character and while the rules can be pretty rigid at times I find that they have very little bearing over my creativity and imagination. Big win overall.
I have been a DM for a Abomination Vaults and Kingmaker campaign for nearly two years, and I have just started a Fists of the Ruby Phoenix AP for a group of friends.
I have been a player in Kingmaker, Rusthenge, Age of Ashes, and a few others. Unfortunately none of which have finished due to real life issues but I have experienced each of these adventure paths in varying amounts.
Now that you know a little more about my experience let's get into the issues.
Some classes feel like they lack synergy with the party in general. A friend of mind explained them as 'main character syndrome' classes and with my first hand experience I would tend to agree with his analysis.
My first real experience with this was when I was playing alongside an Exemplar in Kingmaker. There were other circumstances that may have colored my perception but overall it felt like the Exemplar was the main character. He trivialized most challenges, and far exceeded the performance of any of the other player classes.
As a player I tend to gravitate towards the more roleplay aspects of a ttrpg, but the Exemplar was absolutely a big numbers guy and enjoys finding ways to break the system. Often times combat would be over before the second round and it became obvious that the group would function fine if 2 or so people sat out of each combat and just let the Exemplar go brrrr. No hate towards him, he's overall a wonderful person and I would argue that there is nothing wrong with either our approaches to Pathfinder.
The Age of Ashes campaign I am in is going strong and we recently advanced to level 13. The group works together well, we rely on each other a lot and overall I feel it is balanced. Combat is challenging while not overly punishing and gives me enough wiggle room to attempt some of my more creative use of tactics. For reference the group consists of a Witch, Wizard, Cleric, and Guardian.
While the Kingmaker group is no longer a thing I feel like these two games are a night and day comparison and I am fully aware of what a group with good teamwork should look like.
My current dilemma is this; I have found myself in a group with two puppet Necromancers that have different grim fascinations. I play a Rogue and I am often left wondering what I am even doing there and am getting a similar main character vibe that I had way back when playing with the Exemplar. There are in-character issues with this group as well but I don't feel like it is immediately relevant. ^(Yes, the undead are the issue.)
How do people navigate groups like this? How would you find the coveted teamwork in a group where 2 of the players could theoretically handle the encounter on their own given enough time or prep? Maybe I am overestimating Necromancer but from what I have seen it feels a little bit over tuned. Please feel free to point out if I am wrong.
Edit: Big thanks to people with helpful insights and suggestions. I appreciate you. I realize some folks may think I am attacking their favorite class or something but I have tried to give a lot of grace here in acknowledging there could be other things at play and I refer to my Exemplar friend with fondness even though our playstyles differ. I'm just trying to figure out how to fit into a new party comp with two of nearly the exact same class. Honestly switching my character to a third puppeteer Necromancer instead of my Rogue comes to mind as it would be pretty funny.
